GREENVILLE, S.C. — Playing their second ranked opponent of the season and first Southern Conference match of the year, the Davidson men's tennis team almost made it a perfect day in nearly knocking off #59 Furman, coming up one point short in a 4-3 match on Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center.
“It was a great match and a great environment,” said head coach Drew Barrett. “We were right there and there was some great energy from our guys. We knew it was going to be tough, and playing on the road was yet another challenge. It really came down to the home court advantage that helped lead Furman, but I'm thrilled with our performance and it sets up for what we hope will be a great run in the SoCon.”
Davidson (4-2, 0-1 SoCon) opened up with a strong win at No.1 in doubles action as the tandem of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) ran their record to a perfect 5-0 on the season with a convincing 8-1 triumph over the Paladins top doubles team.
But, Furman (3-3, 1-0 SoCon) came back to take the No. 3 doubles match and closed out the doubles point with an 8-6 victory over the freshman pair of Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Kevin Moore (Overland, Kan.), who were teaming up for the first time this season.
Schafer tried to keep the 'Cats close with his fifth straight singles win, a three-set decision (6-0, 3-6, 6-3) over Sawyer Duncan at the No. 1 position. It was his second win of the year at the top spot.
Furman got wins at No. 3 and 2 singles that gave them a 3-1 lead, setting up freshman Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) to try and score the 'Cats' second point. The freshman, unbeaten at 5-0 entering the match, scored a 6-4 win in his first set, but dropped the second set, 7-5. He played hard in the third set, but fell just short in falling 6-4 to give Furman the fourth and deciding point.
Davidson did get the last two points as Gee earned a super tiebreaker win over Andrei Chvetsov at No. 5 singles and senior Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) ran his singles mark to 3-0 with a 10-8 super tiebreaker win at No. 6 after he split his first two sets.
Davidson returns home for its next three matches, starting with a 1 p.m. match against East Carolina, Feb. 20.
