DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Whitney Russell's double-double helped the College of Charleston to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) win over the Davidson Wildcats Friday night in SoCon volleyball action at Belk Arena.
Russell's 10 kills and 11 digs led Charleston, who improved to a division-best 24-5 overall and 12-1 in the SoCon. Ginny Phillips added nine kills, and Elyse Chubb finished with eight. Cole Dawley finished with a match-best 37 assists, and Paige Johnson contributed 10 digs to the defensive effort.
Senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict and junior opposite Erin Lupfer each had eight kills for Davidson, while senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele and junior outside hitter Christine Perzinski added seven each. Senior setter Hayley Lawson finished with 29 assists, and senior libero led the defense with 13 digs.
Davidson had to fight out of a 10-2 deficit to open the match, but fought back to make a game of it. Trailing 17-10, the Wildcats put together a 7-2 run including kills from Lupfer and Jorden Benedict to close within a pair, 18-16. But the Cougars went 3-1 with a kill from Chubb and two Wildcat errors to push back and closed with a 4-2 run, including the last three and two straight from Phillips for the 25-19 win.
Charleston took a slight 6-3 lead to open the second set, but Davidson answered with a 3-1 run to close within one, 7-6. A kill by junior middle blocker Madison Benedict knotted the score at 10, and the score was tied five times until Davidson won three straight on a kill from Lupfer and two straight Cougar errors to open a 17-15 lead. Sarah Havel's kill and a Davidson hitting error evened the set again, and the teams went back and forth until a pair of Charleston errors put Davidson up 21-19. The Cougars, though, closed with a 6-1 run to win the set, 25-22, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Cougars opened a 12-12 stalemate with a 7-1 run to jump ahead, 19-13, on two kills from Madelyn McGinnis. Davidson again battled back from the deficit, rattling off four straight behind a kill from Jorden Benedict and a Molly Crenshaw service ace to get within two, 20-18. But the Cougars finished with a 5-1 run including two kills by Russell and one from Havel to win the match with the 25-19 victory.
Davidson will return to action tomorrow, hosting The Citadel at 7 p.m. on Senior Night in Belk Arena. Seniors Jorden Benedict, Anna Bradbury, Jennifer Chamblee, Hayley Lawson and Sarabeth Peele will be honored in pregame festivities.
