CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian College scored touchdowns on its first three offensive drives and added three more in the second half en route to a 42-6 victory over Davidson football in the season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at Crocker Field.
Trandon Dandy led the Blue Hose (2-9) on the ground with 163 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, while Lance Byrd added 88 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Myron Gary and Ryan Singer combined to complete 13 of 20 pass attempts for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Ruff led a group five receivers that had two receptions each with 96 yards and touchdowns on both receptions.
Brian Davis led the PC defense with five tackles, three for losses (two sacks). Antarius Terrell had four tackles and one interception.
“They had a little bit too much for us in all aspects of the game,” said Davidson head coach Tripp Merritt. “We didn't execute well early, and with their athleticism, they were going to score points.”
Jonathan Carkhuff completed 17 of 29 passes for 144 yards with one interception for Davidson (3-8). Kenny Mantuo led the 'Cats on the ground with 83 yards on 16 carries with one touchdown. Mark Hanabury totaled six receptions, while Jonathan Adams led in receiving yards with 76 on four receptions.
“We struggled to run the ball, and that got our balance off on offense, so Jonathan was under duress for the whole game,” said Merritt.
John Behm recorded 2.5 sacks and 10 tackles to lead the 'Cats defense. Malcolm Moses-Hampton and Ellis Martin each recorded sacks.
PC drove 93 yards for a touchdown on their first possession, which included a 29-yard pass reception by Patrick McKoy on 3rd-and-8 and a 25-yard run by Dendy to put the Blue Hose in the red zone. Gary then found Jeremy Cole for an eight-yard reception for the touchdown. After earning a stop on defense, PC jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 69-yard pass to Ruff on their next offensive drive.
Davidson found the end zone on their second drive of the game. On 3rd-and-4, Carkhuff scrambled left to elude the PC pass rush, and found Adams downfield on the left sideline for a 51-yard gain to the one-yard line. Mantuo rushed up the middle for the touchdown on the next play, but the 'Cats' extra point attempt rang off the right upright.
PC extended their lead early in the second quarter. A 36-yard pass from Gary to Rob Bumgarner placed the Blue Hose on the seven-yard line and Dendy eventually scored on a run from three-yards out to extend the PC lead to 21-6.
A failed fourth down conversion attempt from the PC 46-yard line with 2:09 remaining in the first half nearly led to another PC score, but Morgan Popham caught a piece of a 41-yard field goal attempt and it fell way short to conclude the half.
PC added three more touchdowns in the second half as Dendy ran 63-yards for PC's fourth touchdown of the day with 8:39 remaining in the third quarter. An interception returned 48 yards to Davidson's 27-yard line setup a Singer pass to Ruff for a touchdown on the first play of the ensuing drive with 5:24 remaining in the third.
A fumbled punt return gave PC the ball in the red zone late in the fourth quarter and Byrd rushed from two yards out for the final 42-6 margin.
Davidson had chances to cut into PC's lead late. The 'Cats broke into the red zone early in the fourth quarter, but missed on a 34-yard field goal. Behm and Daniel Astrop sacked Singer on third down to force the Blue Hose to punt from their own 11-yardline, setting up a short field for the 'Cats offense, but PC stopped the 'Cats on 4th-and-goal from the two-yard line.
The game concluded the careers of 22 Davidson seniors.
“We had a great group of seniors, and I think they are going to be better people for playing football at Davidson,” said Merritt.
Notes: It was the first meeting between the teams on the gridiron since 1988 … senior RB Kenny Mantuo finished with 1,942 career rushing yards … with 144 passing yards, Carkhuff finishes the season with 2,002 passing yards … it marks the ninth time in Davidson history that a Wildcat has reached the milestone ... time of possession was virtually even for the game, with PC holding a four-second edge ... PC converted on 9 of 15 third downs.
