MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Mark Gabriel's late first-half goal gave Furman a 1-0 win over Davidson in the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Semifinal Friday night in Patriots Point Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats finish the season at 7-7-6. Furman improved to 10-6-4 and will face UNCG in the SoCon Championship game Sunday.

“I think it was an even match that could have gone either way,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Unfortunately, in these tight games, one play can decide a game. But we had plenty of opportunities ourselves to make up for that. We needed to be more creative on the attack and more adventurous, but we lacked the sizzle and individual playmaking we needed to score tonight”

Gabriel scored for Furman with just under three minutes remaining in the first half, taking advantage of a Davidson defensive miscue on a ball played forward by Walker Jernigan.

The match was even throughout, with shots finishing even at 4-4 in a very defensive contest. The Wildcats held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4. Junior goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Thomasville, Ga.) made the lone save of the game.

Furman's defense tightened in the second half as the 'Cats looked for the equalizer. Davidson drew a corner kick with just two-and-a-half minutes to go, but Paladin goalkeeper Alex Kann intercepted the attempt in the six-yard box.

“I give a lot of credit to Furman,” said Spear. “They defended well - were organized and tight - and dropped back when they needed to. Kann is an all-conference goaltender who is very sure with his hands, and he did not make any mistakes.”

The match was the final one for Davidson's four seniors Alex Caskey, Yannick Pilgrim, Peter Shelton and Josh Zipin. Caskey finished as the team's scoring leader for the season with 17 points on six goals and five assists.

“They're four great guys who have elevated the program since they have been here,” said Spear. “They're excellent soccer players, but more importantly, they are great ambassadors for Davidson as quality people and great students off the field. They have set great examples for what senior leaders should be, and I'm proud to call them fellow Davidson soccer alumni.”

In the first semifinal match of the night, top-seed UNCG (11-5-4) defeated No. 4 seed Appalachian State, 1-0 in overtime to advance to the championship game. Hakan Ilhan's header inside the near post in the first overtime period broke a scoreless tie.

UNCG controlled possession for much of the match, firing 21 shots to ASU's five as well as a 4-0 edge in overtime. Appalachian State concludes the 2010 campaign with an 8-8-3 overall record.

UNCG and Furman will compete in the SoCon Championship match at 1 p.m. Sunday.
