
Lyons and Hefter Have Strong Weekends at Jeff Frank Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) led Davidson with 21 points, while fellow classmate Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) went 3-0 in singles for 17 points as the Davidson men's tennis team hosted the Jeff Frank Invitational this past weekend at the Covington Tennis Courts.
The invitational was a flight championship for both singles and doubles with each flight carrying a weighted point system. The top flight, No. 1, carried eight points and went all the way down to flight No. 8, which carried one point. In doubles it was the top flight, No. 1, carrying four points all the way down to the No. 4 spot, which was worth one point.
Lyons picked up a pair of doubles wins and then went 3-0 in his singles matches for his 21 points. The senior swept through singles play with a 6-0 6-2 win over a player from Charlotte, then scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over Appalachian State, before closing the weekend with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set victory over campbell.
His two doubles wins came over Campbell and Charlotte as he teamed with freshman Ethan Kallick (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for 9-8 and 8-6 wins.
Kallick finished the weekend with 13 combined points, winning all three of his singles matches including two super tiebreakers over Charlotte and ASU.
Hefter had a strong weekend with three singles wins over players from Charlotte, Appalachian State and Campbell. His weekend started with a 6-4, 3-6, 12-10 win over the 49ers and then earned another super tiebreaker win (2-6, 6-3, 10-3) over the Mountaineers. Hefter ended his weekend with a straight set, 7-6, 6-3 win over Campbell.
Sophomore Kevin Moore (Overland Park, Kan.) matched Lyons and Hefter with a 3-0 singles record to score 11 points. All three singles matches he won in straight sets, and then he teamed with Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) for an 8-2 doubles win over a pair from ASU. Mark picked up nine points over the weekend.
Sophomore Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led Davidson in doubles play with eight doubles.
Also scoring over the weekend was Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) with four points, while the freshman tandem of Connor Evins (Greenville, S.C.) and Robert Lightbourn (Nassau, Bahamas) scored six points and one point, respectively.
Davidson remains at home, hosting the Jim Causey Invitational this coming weekend, Oct. 8-9.
