STATESBORO, Ga. — The Davidson women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Georgia Southern on Thursday afternoon in Southern Conference action.
The Wildcats (6-8-5, 2-4-5 SoCon) concluded the regular season on a three-game unbeaten streak. They will look to carry that momentum into the first round of the SoCon Tournament. The 'Cats earned the seventh seed and head to play second-seeded Samford this Sunday in Birmingham, Ala. for an evening contest.
In getting the 1-1 tie, Davidson set a new school mark with its fifth tie of the year. All five ties came against SoCon-foes, another school bench mark set.
Sophomore Rachel Barnett (Raleigh, N.C.) brought the 'Cats back from a 1-0 deficit in the middle stages of the second half. After seeing the Eagles (5-12-1, 2-8-1 SoCon) grab the lead first on a Sara Oland goal at the 51:50 mark, Davidson was able to hit the equalizer in the 64th minute.
Team assist-leader Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), much like she has done all season, again set up a Wildcat goal, this time the tying one. She sent a cross into the 18-yard box, where Barnett took the ball out of the air with a header and netted her second goal of the season with 64:30 on the clock.
Drutchas pushed her assist total to eight on the season, ranking second in the SoCon. The senior has 17 assists for her career, just outside the Wildcats' top-five career record book.
Georgia Southern got off the only two shots in both extra periods, but the 'Cats denied both those shots in closing with the 1-1 draw.
The 'Cats got off six shots in the first half, putting three of those on goal, but were not able to punch one through as both teams played to a scoreless half. Davidson added six more shots in the second half for a game-high 12, with eight of those coming on goal.
Goalkeeper Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) played all 110 minutes, coming up with four saves in goal. For GSU, Katie Merson and Missy Meyer split time between the post, combining for seven saves.
Davidson will play at Samford (12-5-2, 8-2-1 SoCon) on Sunday, Oct. 31 in the first round of the SoCon Tournament. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
The Wildcats played to a scoreless draw just three games ago vs. the Bulldogs and hold a 1-0-2 record in the all-time series. Last year in Birmingham, Callan Elswick (Locust Grove, Va.) scored the tying goal as Davidson and Samford played to a 1-1 draw in the regular season.
Should the Wildcats win on Sunday, they would head to Cullowhee, N.C., Nov. 5-7, where the SoCon Tournament continues with the semifinals and finals on the campus of Western Carolina. Davidson has captured four SoCon Tournament Titles, including last year's that sent the 'Cats to their first NCAA Tournament.
