Four Unanswered Second-Half Goals Give 'Cats Field Hockey Fourth-Straight Win

10/2/2010 4:40:11 PM | Field Hockey

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson Wildcats roared to life midway through the second half, scoring four unanswered goals over the remainder of the game to turn a two-goal deficit into a two-goal advantage and defeat Longwood, 6-4 in NorPac field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

The season-high six-goal output was the most ever for Davidson, in a NorPac Conference match. The Wildcats improved to 9-2 overall and are off to their first 2-0 start in conference play since 2003.

Sophomore forward Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored two goals to pace Davidson, and sophomore midfielder Annie Evans (Lake Forest, Ill.) and junior midfielder Gray Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) both tallied a goal and an assist. Junior Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) had two assists.

Stacy de Grandhomme led Longwood (2-9, 0-2 NorPac) with a goal and an assist and six shots.

“I was disappointed that we started out flat, but we came out hard in the second half,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “We made some great plays and earned an awesome conference win.”

Amato scored the first of Davidson's five second-half goals, punching in a loose rebound just 3:33 into the second frame to even the match at 2-2. Longwood regained the momentum though, as Taylor Bender deflected a shot from Kimberly Sullivan off of a corner just under 10 minutes later to put the Lancers back on top, 3-2. Lauren van de Kamp made it a 4-2 advantage less than five minutes later as Olga Knop found her unmarked off a corner, and van de Kamp lifted a shot into the top left corner of the cage.

With 24 minutes remaining, the 'Cats found their rhythm offensively. After controlling the ball offensively immediately after the Longwood goal, Amato went to the front of the net and tipped in a pass from Robinson to halve the Lancers' advantage.

Senior midfielder Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored the equalizer off a penalty corner attempt in the 60th minute, rocketing a shot into the back of the cage after English found her unmarked at the top of the circle.

The Wildcats took advantage of their second penalty corner attempt of the half to take their first lead of the game with 7:43 remaining. English blasted a shot from the top of the circle and junior forward Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) deflected it in for her eighth goal of the season.

Robinson iced the win with a minute remaining. Evans passed across the goalmouth from outside the right post to Robinson, who knocked it in to an open cage with Longwood goalkeeper Kaye Goulding out of position defending the pass.

Longwood held a 2-1 advantage at halftime. de Grandhomme put Longwood on the board just 5:03 in, but Davidson answered in the ninth minute when Senior midfielder Jennie Mosteller (New Bern, N.C.) dribbled into the circle and found Evans near the right post for the tap-in goal. The Lancers went back on top off a corner as Lauren Sullivan knocked in a pass de Grandhomme slipped past challenging Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 11th minute.

All 10 Davidson shots were on target, with Goulding making four saves. Longwood outshot Davidson 14-10, as Fisher made seven stops on 11 shots on goal. Longwood also held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Davidson will play their next three on the road, taking on Brown, Saturday, and Maine, the following Monday in Providence, R.I. They will travel to Fairfield, Conn. Tuesday to face Sacred Heart. Their next home match is Saturday, October 16 at 12 p.m. against VCU.

Notes: Davidson's six goals give them 37 for the season, eclipsing their 2009 season total of 33 … the 'Cats remain on pace to break their single-season scoring record of 52 … Amato now leads the team and conference with 24 points (10 goals, 4 assists) … her point total is the most scored by a Wildcat since 2007 when NorPac Player of the Year Kayli Maxwell tallied 35 points … Davidson's top-five scorers, Amato (24 points), Rua (17 points), Mostellar (15 points), Robinson (15 points) and Evans (10 points) have all surpassed their previous season-best point totals.
