CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The doubles team of junior Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and sophomore Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) had an excellent opening two rounds in the first day of the ITA Carolinas Regional on the campus of UNC.
The pair started the day off with an 8-6 triumph over a team from Coastal Carolina to reach the round of 32, matching their finish last year. From there, the duo scored a huge upset win, 8-5, over the fifth-seeded team of Dominic Hodgson and Julian Sullivan of NC State to reach the round of 16.
Schafer and Gee will now play a doubles team from Duke, which is ranked ninth in the tournament on Friday.
Also participating at the regionals was the team of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.). They also had a strong opening round, scoring an 8-3 victory over SoCon-foe The Citadel to reach the round of 32. Their weekend came to an end when they dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision to seventh-seeded David Holland and Chris Mengel of Duke.
Singles play will start Friday as well as the continuing of doubles action.
