
Chris Mark Takes Home Singles Title at Davidson Jim Causey Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Wrapping up its final Fall tennis event before Regionals, sophomore Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) led the Davidson men's tennis team by capturing the singles title at the Davidson Jim Causey Invitational this past weekend at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Mark totaled 22 points in singles play to earn the singles title, while Gardner-Webb's Ural Ates was second with 15 points. There was a three-way tie for the doubles title with Davidson's Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) earning eight points to match the runnin' Bulldogs' Andrew Carter and John DeVose, and Furman's Andrei Chvetsov and Tyler Droll for first place.
The invitational was a flight championship for both singles and doubles with each flight carrying a weighted point system. The top flight, No. 1, carried eight points and went all the way down to flight No. 8, which carried one point. In doubles it was the top flight, No. 1, carrying four points all the way down to the No. 4 spot, which was worth one point.
Mark rattled off three straight-set wins over players from Gardner-Webb, Charlotte and Furman. He opened the weekend with a 6-0, 6-1 win, followed by another 6-0, 6-1 win over the 49ers' Krzysztof Kwasniewicz. He finished the weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) followed with 10 points after a pair of straight set wins. After falling in his first match of the weekend, the senior came back to score a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alex Weber of Charlotte and then registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Furman's Browning.
The duo of Schafer and Gee each recorded eight points in singles play, while Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) and freshman Ethan Kallick (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were next with six points. Kallick had a 3-0 weekend, earning a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Gardner-Webb, then scoring two straight-set wins (7-6, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1) over Radek Langer of South Carolina State and Collins of Furman.
Three Wildcat doubles teams scored over the weekend with the duo of Schafer and Gee tying for first place with their eight points. The duo got two 8-5 triumphs at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Lyons and Mark earned a 9-8 victory over Furman's Aru and Christ, while the freshman classmates Connor Evins (Greenville, S.C.) and Robert Lightbourn (Nassau, Bahamas) picked up an 8-5 win over a duo from Gardner-Webb.
Davidson will wrap up its Fall season by ending to the Regionals, Oct. 15-17.
