DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) remained prefect through his first three collegiate singles matches as he scored a pair of wins in helping lead the Davidson men's tennis team to their first two wins of 2010 with victories over Presbyterian (4-0) and Richmond (4-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The freshman also remained undefeated with partner Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) in doubles action with back-to-back 8-2 wins in each of the matches.
The Wildcats (2-1 record) started the day off with a 4-0 sweep of Presbyterian (0-2) to score their first win of 2010.
The two doubles teams of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland), and Burns and Mark netted the doubles point to start the match by capturing 8-3 and 8-2 triumphs at the No. 2 and 3 position.
Then in singles action, the trio of Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.), Mark and Gee gave the Wildcats the next three points to seal the match. Noble earned his first win of the season with a strong 6-4, 7-5 decision over Matthew Martin at No. 1 singles.
Mark followed that up with a straight set 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, while Gee earned a comeback win after dropping the first set, 3-6, by taking home 6-2, 6-1 decisions in the next two sets for his first victory of 2010.
Mark and the Wildcats continued their strong display in both doubles and singles by taking two doubles matches and three of the four singles matches that were finished vs. Richmond in the afternoon.
The duo of Eric Noble and Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) tallied their first win in doubles play with a convincing 8-1 decision at No. 1, while Burns and Mark made it a perfect day with a win at No. 3 to help the 'Cats capture the doubles points.
Schafer then registered his second collegiate singles win with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over William Minter at No. 2, while Lyons gave Davidson it's third point on a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4.
After Richmond earned a point at No.1 singles, Mark sealed the win for Davidson with a strong effort at No. 3. The freshman scored a 6-4 set-one win, and then prevailed in a back-and-forth affair in the second set, 7-6, to move to 3-0 on the season.
Davidson continues its homestand with a 1 p.m. match against South Carolina State, Jan. 31.
