DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team will honor their late former head coach Jeff Frank with the playing of the first Jeff Frank Invitational this weekend, Oct. 2-3, at the Covington Tennis Courts on the campus of Davidson College.
Joining Davidson at the Frank Invitational will be Charlotte, Furman and Winthrop with the first day of play starting on Friday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
Frank, one of the most successful coaches in Davidson sports and the head coach for the men's tennis program for 34 years, passed away this past summer. The school's all-time winningest coach in any sport, Frank concluded his coaching career with a 541-319-1 record. His Wildcat teams posted winning records in 29 of his 33 seasons, and he led the 'Cats to at least 10 victories each year.
The legendary coach was a 1966 graduate of Davidson and a four-year member of the tennis squad, while breaking into the ranks of coaching by coaching the Wildcat freshman team.
The invitational will be a round-robin individual team format as Davidson will play Charlotte first, while Furman plays Winthrop on Friday. Doubles will be played first, four matches with eight-game pro sets. Singles will be followed second as there will be eight matches each with the winner needing to take two out of three sets or a tie breaker will be played in the third set to determine the winner. The later session of the day on Friday will feature doubles play again, with Davidson players taking on players from the Winthrop Eagles, while the 49ers will take on Furman.
Saturday's play starts at 8:30 a.m. with singles play featuring Davidson vs. Winthrop and Charlotte taking on Furman. Closing out the individual invitational will be the 'Cats playing Furman in doubles and singles play, while the Eagles and Paladins square off in the same format.
In addition to plenty of tennis being played for the two days, Friday evening from 4:30 to 6:30, the Wildcats will showcase a Cornhole Tournament, with the winners getting men's tennis t-shirts. For more information about signing up to participate in the Cornhole Tournament, please contact head coach Drew Barrett at 704-894-2438 or drbarrett@davidson.edu. Space is limited, so sign up early.
