DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson BuzzKill, a 3-on-3 Tournament for kids spearheaded by Wildcat guard Bryant Barr, raised over $15,000 last weekend in Belk Arena. The money will be donated to Nothing But Nets, an organization dedicated to preventing malaria in Africa by providing anti-mosquito bed nets for families to sleep under.
The donation allows Nothing But Nets to send over 1,500 insecticide-covered bed nets to African villages, protecting more than 6,000 people from malaria.
“It was a huge success, and we raised over three times what we were hoping for,” said Barr. “We had help from a number of volunteers, who made everything run smoothly. It's an event we'll definitely have again next year.”
Twenty-seven teams with four players on a squad participated in the tournament. Teams were encouraged to raise extra money by getting sponsors, and the team which raised the most money received the first pick in a draft of coaches.
The team that picked first raised over $700 and picked Stephen Curry. Barr was picked second, and Will Reigel was taken third, with each team raising over $400 to get the second and third picks. All told, over $5,000 was raised by the participating teams in order to draft their coaches.
An online silent auction and a live auction accompanied the tournament. Signed Stephen Curry game-worn shoes drew a bid of $800, while a signed LeBron James jersey got $550. A dinner at 131 Main with assistant coaches Jim Fox, Matt McKillop and TI Ivory drew a bid of $1,205, and a lobster dinner with The White Lobster (Barr's nickname) fetched $550. Head coach Bob McKillop's autographed bench chair got a bid of $305.
