DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The seventh-seeded Davidson Wildcats will face the second-seeded Georgia Southern Eagles in the opening game of the 2009 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Fluor Field at the West End in Greenville, S.C.
Georgia Southern (38-15, 20-8) swept Davidson (18-29, 11-16) in regular-season play in Statesboro this season, with wins of 12-7, 20-8, and 11-2 April 17-19. The Eagles posted conference series wins over Appalachian State and Western, and swept the College of Charleston, Greensboro, Samford and Wofford.
Davidson, picked to finish last in the SoCon preseason Coaches' Poll, earned the seventh seed with series victories over Furman and Samford, a split with Appalachian State and sweeps of Greensboro and Elon, in a rain-shortened series.
Regular season champion Elon will be the tournament's top seed for the second consecutive season. After starting conference play with a 6-4 mark, Elon reeled off 17 consecutive SoCon victories to finish 23-4 in league play and claim its second straight regular season title. The Phoenix, which won the 2008 SoCon Tournament, will face the tournament's No. 8 seed and hometown team, Furman (10-20), at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 in first round play.
The winner of the Eagles-Wildcats matchup will face the winner of Wednesday's second game between No. 3 seed The Citadel (20-10) and No. 6 seed Appalachian State (15-13).
Following Elon and Furman, the final first round game will pit No. 4 seed Western Carolina (19-10) against No. 5 seed College of Charleston (17-13) at 9 p.m.
The top eight teams in the final Southern Conference standings qualified for the tournament, which features two four-team double-elimination brackets producing a single-elimination championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 24. The championship game will be televised by SportSouth on tape delay at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening. The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championships.
