ELON, N.C. — After its outstanding come-from-behind win on Thursday to open the Southern Conference Tournament, the Davidson men's tennis team saw their run end as they dropped a 4-0 quarterfinal decision to top-seeded Furman on Friday morning at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Davidson concludes its 2009 season at 7-17 overall. Furman, which improved to 20-7, moves on to play the winner of UNC Greensboro and Georgia Southern in the semifinals on Saturday.
The match opened up with the Paladins capturing the doubles point by taking wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots by the scores of 8-4 and 8-0.
Davidson then was swept in straight sets at the singles spots of No. 1, 4 and 6 to fall by the score of 4-0. Eric Noble, Calum Gee and Carter Braxton each battled through in their matches, but fell in the end.
Playing in their final career matches was the senior duo of Scott Myers and Brandon Byrd. Playing doubles for the last time, Byrd teamed with Braxton at the No. 3 position.
Myers played both doubles and singles, falling in his doubles match, but had won his first set, 6-4, in singles over Daniel Knause. He did not complete the rest of the match as Furman had already captured the four points to seal the win.
Myers, a second-team All-SoCon member last season, led the team for the second year in a row with 12 singles wins as he finished his senior campaign at 12-11. He added another 10 wins in doubles action this year to conclude his career with 47 singles victories and 19 doubles wins.
