Furman Spoils Senior Day for W. Tennis, ‘Cats Fall 6-1

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Looking to finish out the regular season with their third straight win and give their two seniors one last home win, the Davidson women's tennis team fell short as they dropped a 6-1 decision to the top team in the Southern Conference, Furman, on Saturday afternoon at Covington Tennis Courts.
Davidson saw its two-match winning streak come to an end as it finished 11-11 overall in the regular season and 6-4 in league play. Furman closed out league play perfect with a 10-0 mark, while improving to 15-7 overall.
Honoring their two seniors, Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Lora Dushanova (Silven, Bulgaria) prior to the match, the Wildcats took just one of the six singles spots after being swept in doubles play in dropping the five-point match.
Dushanova netted her second straight win for the 'Cats lone point on the afternoon. She scored a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 win over Jennifer Betts to move to 3-1 on the season and a close out her league match career with a 2-0 mark.
Fanney battled No. 1 Laura Gioia, where she fell 6-2, 6-0 to finish the regular season at 10-11 overall, 6-4 in league matches.
Seeing her season- and team-best eight-match win streak come to an end was junior Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.), who dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Monica Arguello. Berry, who dropped her first league match of the season, still closed out the regular season with a 16-6 mark and a personal-best 9-1 vs. SoCon foes.
The Wildcats will now gear up for the Southern Conference Tournament, Apr. 23-26, in Elon, N.C.
