DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson took wins in five of the six singles positions on its way to scoring a 6-1 home decision over the Wofford Terriers on Wednesday afternoon at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center in Southern Conference action.
The Wildcats evened their league mark at 2-2 and improved to 6-8 overall, while the Terriers fell to 1-3 in SoCon action and 2-9 overall.
For the second time in the past three matches, Davidson started off by scoring the doubles point after earning wins at No. 1 and 3. Leading the way was senior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and junior Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.), who teamed up for the first time this year and netted an 8-1 win over Ashley Lawrence and Cayley Wetzig.
The duo then led five Wildcats to singles wins by scoring their sixth and ninth wins, respectively, in singles play to carry Davidson to the 6-1 win. Fanney ran her conference mark to 3-1 with a three-set win over Wetzig at No. 1. The senior took the first set, before dropping a tie breaker in the second set. Fanney closed out the match with a 6-3 triumph in the third set.
Berry remained unbeaten in league matches by taking a straight set (6-1, 6-2) decision over Lawrence at No. 2. The junior is a team-best 9-5 on the season in dual singles matches.
Also scoring singles wins on the afternoon was No. 4 Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.), No. 5 Molly McDevitt (Albuquerque, N.M.) and No. 6 Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.). All three players earned their fifth singles wins overall in the season and second in league play as they each scored straight set wins.
Sabrina Smyers scored the Terriers lone point as she broke Alison Rauh's (Trier, Germany) season-best three-match winning streak with a 6-3, 6-4 decision at the No. 3 position.
The busy week continues for the Wildcats as they take a day off before playing host to Cal State on Friday at 2 p.m. They then will travel to Chattanooga and Samford for two more Southern Conference matches on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 28th and 29th.
