DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team (3-1) fought off the rainy and cold elements of mother nature to earn its second straight win over the weekend with an 11-5 decision over Central Connecticut State (0-3) on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Playing in a steady down pour of rain all afternoon, the Wildcats were able to gain their footing in the second half when they turned a one-goal lead (4-3) at halftime, into a six-goal win by outscoring the Blue Devils, 7-2, in the second half.
The game was called at the 12 minute mark of the second period after it was determined that the field conditions were no longer safe and were non-playable.
The game is still official as it was determined prior to the game by the officials that there might a stoppage in play after 80 percent of the contest was played if the playing field was determined to be non-playable.
Senior Becky Horton (Walnut Creek, Calif.) had her third straight multi-goal game with a team-high three goals, including two in the second half. Match Horton with three points as well was freshman Jenna Mugele (Baltimore, Md.) as she tallied two goals and her first collegiate assist.
Freshman Anna Smith (Newburyport, Mass.) and Haley Cook (Darien, Conn.) each registered two goals apiece, while Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Heather Frohman (Baltimore, Md.) had a goal and an assist each to round out the Wildcat scoring.
The Blue Devils were led by Alexa Smead's two scores, while three others scored single goals on the afternoon.
Both teams tried to establish their offense in the first half, but the field conditions caused the scoring to be rather low as they played to a 3-3 tie through the first 27 minutes. Cook then gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead heading into halftime with a strike from the middle of the eight-meter box.
As the rain let up a bit during the start of the second half, Davidson took advantage, scoring five of the next six goals in the first 13 minutes of the new period. CCSU's lone goal during that time was by Lyndsey Mastandrea at the 25:08 mark that brought the Blue Devils to within two at 6-4.
Mugele helped give the Wildcats some breathing room by assisting on Frohman's goal at the 23:48 mark and then scored one of her own at the 21:44 mark for an 8-4 Davidson lead that it would not relinquish.
Despite the poor playing conditions, Davidson kept pressure on Central Connecticut State's goalkeeper most of the afternoon by firing off 28 shots in the game. Alice Lee of CCSU was credited with a game-high 10 saves.
The Wildcats picked up 12 groundballs with Horton, Crawford and Smith combined for seven of them, and also had a 10-5 advantage in draw controls.
Davidson continues its seven-game homestand with a 1 p.m. contest against Monmouth on Sunday, Mar. 8.
