DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team ran its winning streak to three straight with wins over Wingate (7-0) and Liberty (5-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
Davidson ran its overall mark to 3-1 with the two non-conference wins.
Junior Virginia Berry led the charge on Saturday, earning four combined wins in both doubles and singles play against Wingate and Liberty. The junior started her afternoon off with an 8-1 win at the No. 1 doubles spot with Alison Rauh, then scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kara Stasikelis in her first match at the No. 1 singles position this year.
Berry and Rauh also netted an 8-1 win over Liberty's No. 1 doubles team, before then Berry closed out her afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 2 singles spot.
Three other Wildcats netted a combined three wins in the two victories with Ali Gores, Samantha Galainena and Molly McDevitt each accomplishing the feat.
Gores earned her second and third career singles wins with straight set decisions over Zoe Hartas of Wingate and Katy Laderer at the No. 3 and 5 spots.
Galainena scored her first win of her 2009 campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Wingate's Hollyn Alberghini, and then closed out her solid afternoon with a victory at the No. 6 position over Liberty as she helped the Wildcats take four of the six singles matches.
Freshman McDevitt teamed with senior Michele Fanney to scored two of her wins in doubles play as the duo improved to 3-1 on the season together.
Also assisting the Wildcats to their two wins was Molly Verlin and Katharine Dicconson, who each saw their first action of the spring. Verlin was one of six 'Cats to sweep through their singles matches against Wingate, picking up a 6-1, 6-0 triumph for her first collegiate win.
Dicconson, playing in her first collegiate match against Wingate, scored an 8-1 doubles win, and then shut out Samantha Alschlager at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-0.
Davidson returns to the courts, Feb. 14, with a trip to Virginia Tech, seeking the program's first win in the all-time series against the Hokies. Last year saw the 'Cats drop a 7-0 decision.
