GREENVILLE, S.C. — Senior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) tallied her career-best and league-leading 15th double-double, and Davidson shot a season-best 54.2 percent from the field in capping off its regular season with a close 66-63 road victory at Furman on Saturday afternoon in women's basketball Southern Conference play.
Davidson closed out the regular season with a 12-17 record and 11-9 in league play, earning the fifth seed at the upcoming SoCon Tournament next week. The Wildcats will play on Saturday, Mar. 7 against fourth-seeded College of Charleston in the quarterfinal game.
Furman, who honored its three seniors prior to the game, fell to 12-17 overall and 6-14 in SoCon action.
Robinson, the league's preseason player of the year, closed out her final regular season game with 11 points and 10 boards, assisting the Wildcats to a 34-27 edge in rebounding. She reached the double-figure plateau in points for the 23rd time this season, while getting 10 or more boards for the 16th time. Robinson set the program's single-season record for most rebounds at College of Charleston on Monday, Feb. 23.
Robinson was not alone in reaching the double-digit mark in points, as Ashley Lax (Little Rock, Ark.) led the Wildcat attack with 15 points, followed by Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) with 11 and point guard Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) at 10, while handing out a team-best four assists.
Down 56-54 after Furman's Shana Booker hit one-of-two free throws, the Wildcats used a 10-3 run from the 4:17 mark to the 30 second mark to grab a 64-58 lead. The 'Cats scored on three straight possessions to start the run with?Thompson canning a three-pointer, and Paquette along with Robinson hitting buckets inside.
Davidson then had to hold off a last-second charge by Furman. Two free throws by Candace Dowell brought the score to 64-60 and then after the 'Cats hit a single free throw, a long Melissa Liebschwager three-ball made the score 65-63 with four ticks left in the game.
Paquette was quickly fouled and hit the first of two free throw attempts with 1.8 seconds. Furman's last chance came on a half-court try that fell short giving Davidson the three-point win.
To go along with her 11 points off the bench, Paquette added seven rebounds and a season-high tying three blocks. Her presence down on the blocks helped Davidson earn a 36-12 scoring advantage in the points.
Furman was led by the guard duo of Liebschwager and Lee Stephens with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The duo hit a combined nine of the Paladins' 11 three-balls in the game, going 9-of-17. Furman finished 11-of-30 from behind the arc, but end the game hitting only 38.9 percent of its field goal tries in all.
Davidson used a 57.7 percent shooting clip in the first half to grab a 35-29 halftime advantage. Six Wildcats got in the books to help them jump out to a 20-12 lead after a Paquette jumper at the 12 minute mark. Junior Monica Laune (Ashland, Neb.) led the spurt with seven points.
Robinson pushed the lead out to 11 on a trey from the corner, but Furman worked its way back into the game with the use of the three-ball. Liebschwager hit two three-pointers in a three-minute stretch, and then Stephens hit back-to-back jumpers to bring the Paladins within two, 30-28, with 2:35 left in the half.
Davidson hit the 10-assist mark for the seventh straight game, dishing out a game-best 15 dimes.
The Wildcats will ready themselves now for the SoCon Tournament, Mar. 5-9, in Chattanooga, Tenn.
