Men's and Women's Swimming in Second Place after Strong Opening at CCSAs

ATHENS, Ga. -- The Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving teams kicked off the first day of competition at the 2009 CCSA Championships with a strong showing, setting seven new school records.
Both the men's and women's 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams set new school records, and individually, freshman Curtis Chaney (500 free), classmate Geoff Peitz (200 IM), sophomore Patrick Whitman (50 free) and junior Caitlin Sheetz (500 free) had all-time Davidson bests.
After day one, Florida Gulf Coast women's swimming is in the lead with 298 points, Davidson is in second with 209 points and Gardner-Webb is third at 132. On the men's side, College of Charleston is first with 260 points, Davidson is in a close second at 244 and Gardner-Webb holds the third spot at 176.
"The teams were outstanding today," head coach John Young said. "We feel very good about our performances, but we still have a lot of work remaining to do."
The Wildcat men kicked off the evening session with a school-record, winning time of 1:21.51 in the 200 free relay, as Whitman, sophomore Bryan Droll, junior Brad Carman and senior Scott Frantz bested the College of Charleston (1:23.20) and Gardner-Webb (1:23.96).
Sophomore Lindsey Martin, sophomore Alexa Richardson, senior Courtney Sanders and sophomore Emily Castle finished second in the relay with a school-record time of 1:34.31.
Chaney won the 500 free with a school-record time of 4:26.89, and senior Merritt Peele was third in the heat with a time of 4:32.29. Freshman Colin Nelson (10th, 4:52.04) scored in the consolation final.
On the women's side, Sheetz finished fourth with a school-record time of 4:57.85, followed by senior Alanna Ream's sixth-place time of 4:58.68, also under her own old standard.
In the 200 IM, Peitz finished with a runner-up, school-record time of 1:51.88, and Frantz finished third with a time of 1:53.79. Freshman Brian Seo (9th, 1:55.53) and sophomore Ben Lucas (13th, 1:58.26) competed in the consolation final.
Freshman Lauren Kamperman (7th, 2:06.62) and Stringfield (8th, 2:06.93) scored for the Wildcats in the 200 IM championship final.
Whitman set a new school record in the 50 free with a first-place time of 20.66, followed by Droll, whose runner-up time of 20.79 also bettered the old standard. Carman placed fifth with a time of 21.29, as junior Miller Williams (10th, 21.42) and sophomore Tennant Brastow (14th, 21.70) also scored for the Wildcats.
Martin won the 50 free for a second straight season, finishing with a time of 23.04, ahead of Gardner-Webb's Corey Hughey. Castle finished third with a time of 23.58, and senior Courtney Sanders placed sixth with a time of 23.98. Freshman Casey Van Tassell (10th, 24.09) and sophomore Alexa Richardson (15th, 24.43) scored in the consolation final.
Freshman Ben Lane won the 3-meter dive with a score of 293.70. In the women's 1-meter dive, junior Linnea Buttermore finished third with a score of 228.65, and senior Stephannie McKinney was fifth with a score of 208.45.
And in the final event of the evening, Frantz, Peitz, Carman and Chaney finished second in the 400 medley relay with a school-record time of 3:23.38, behind the College of Charleston. The Wildcat women's team of Stringfield, Curtiss, Castle and Martin also set a new school record with a fourth-place time of 3.51.78.
Competition will resume Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals to be contested at 6 p.m.
