DAVIDSON, N.C. —
Freshman Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) registered her second career double-double in the past three games, but Appalachian State put three scorers in double digits and sent Davidson to its first Southern Conference loss, 68-59, on Monday evening in the 'Cats home opener in women's basketball action.

Aleksandravicius poured in a game-high 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor and added four shots from the charity stripe, while pulling down a season- and team season-best 16 rebounds off the bench as the Wildcats fell to 2-7 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon.

The freshman assisted the Wildcats to a 35-18 advantage in bench points. Senior Monica Laune (Ashland, Neb.) just missed scoring in double figures off the bench as well, closing with a perfect night. She was 3-of-3 from the floor, including a three-ball, and hit both of her free throws. Laune tied fellow senior Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) with a team-high four assists, which matched her season best.

Aleksandravicius recorded a double-double (13 points/13 rebounds) just in the second half alone, when she helped the Wildcats trim an 18-point Mountaineer lead all the way down to five points, 58-53, with 5:15 left in the game. She scored nine points, including seven straight during Davidson's 19-6 run midway through the second half that brought the Wildcats to within five.

ASU countered with a layup from Sade Means and a jumper by Anna Freeman on its next two possessions and Davidson got no closer than seven points the remainder of the game.

Senior Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) joined Aleksandravicius in the double-digit column, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added three more points at the 15-foot line.

Pacing the Mountaineers (3-4, 1-1 SoCon) was the trio of Sam Ramirez (17), Ashlen Dewart (16) and Chakeitha Weldon (12), who each hit the double-digit mark in points. They combined to shoot 52.9 percent from the field and ASU?as a team hit 46.7 percent of its shots in the game.

The game started out with both teams heating up the nets to the tune of a 14-all tie. Davidson hit six of its first nine shots, while Appalachian State hit seven of its first 14.

The Mountaineers then started to pull away when they went on an 11-1 run capped off by a Catherine Williams' layup in the paint for a 25-16 advantage at the 7:20 mark.

Later, Davidson cut the deficit to five, 30-25, on back-to-back buckets inside by Aleksandravicius and sophomore Kristen Johnsen (Wayne, Pa.), but Ramirez hit the first of her three treys in the game with six seconds left to send ASU into halftime up 33-25.

Through the first six minutes of the opening of the second half, Dewart gave the Mountaineers a 16-point lead that grew to 18 later, with two layups for a 46-30 lead and 14 minutes on the clock. The ASU forward had 12 of her 16 points in the second period and was part of a 42-point outburst by the Mountaineers on points in the paint.

Also assisting the Mountaineers on the evening were 21 points scored off of 23 Davidson miscues, with 10 of those coming on fast break points.

Davidson looks for its first home win on Sunday, Dec. 13, when it hosts SoCon-foe Wofford at 2 p.m.

Game Notes: Davidson saw its three-game home-opener win streak come to an end, falling to 6-3 during coach Watts' nine seasons ... the last time ASU took back-to-back wins against the Wildcats in the all-time series was during the 2005-06 season ... the Wildcats hit 45.1 percent of their shots, the third time this year it has shot 45 percent or better in a game ... Davidson's 15 assists were the second-most dished out on the year.
