After Long Break, Davidson Returns to the Hardwood vs. Newberry on Tuesday

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team, after a long Christmas break, returns to Belk Arena to close out the year on Tuesday, Dec. 29, when it plays host to Newberry College in non-conference action.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (3-7) will seek to finish December in winning fashion when it plays against Newberry College (8-2) on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. The Wildcats have been off since playing host to Wofford at home on Dec. 13 in a Southern Conference tilt.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is just two games old with the series tied at 1-1. Both teams have not faced each other since the 1976-77 season, playing a home-and-home series that season.
Scouting the Wildcats
•Davidson returns to the hardwood after a 16-day break because of its game at Radford being snowed out, Dec. 18.
•The Wildcats are seeking their eighth straight winning month of December.
•The 'Cats latest win saw them pick up their third victory in the past four contest with a 90-68 triumph vs. Wofford, Dec. 13, in Southern Conference action.
•The 90 points were a season-high and it was the fifth time in the last eight meeting at home vs. the Terriers that Davidson has scored at least 80 points.
•Freshman Sophia Aleksandravicius led four players who scored in double digits with game high honors of 26 points and nine rebounds. She hit a new team season-high 10 field goals.
•It was the third time in the last four games she has led the team in points and rebounds.
•During that time, the freshman is averaging a double-double at 20.3 ppg and 10.0 rpg.
•She is averaging 12.1 ppg overall, second-best on the team, and has hit the 20-point mark twice.
•Redshirt sophomore Chloe Woodington teamed with Aleksandravicius off the bench to lead Davidson to a 47-20 advantage in bench points with a season-high 11 points.
•Davidson hit season bests in field goals and free throws made, along with assists. It also matched its season high in field goal percentage with an even 50 percent.
•Senior Alex Thompson reached double digits in points for the seventh time this year. She leads the team with a 13.0 ppg average and is hitting 50 percent of her field goals.
•Davidson is hunting for its first non-conference win of the year as it sits at 0-6.
•The Wildcats are in a stretch where they play five of their next six games at Belk Arena.
•In their two home games this year, the 'Cats are averaging 74.8 ppg with two players averaging in double figures (Aleksandravicius- 22.5 ppg & 12.5 rpg, and Julia Paquette- 13.0 ppg).
•Last year saw Davidson go 4-3 in December games. They currently are 2-1 this year.
•Coach Watts (ninth season) is the program's all-time winningest coach with a 133-113 record.
•This will be just the Wildcats' third meeting with Newberry College in the all-time series as the series is all knotted up at 1-apiece. The two teams have not faced each other since 1976-77.
•The two teams last met in Newberry ( 2/8/77) with Davidson dropping a two-point contest.
Scouting the Scarlet & Gray
•Newberry College comes into the contest tonight winners of six of its last seven games, including a 76-57 triumph over Anderson, Dec. 19, before taking a break for Christmas.
•Helen McKinney and Anita Bulcher each clipped the 20-point mark in the win, with Bulcher hauling in 10 rebounds.
•The duo are first and second in scoring for the Scarlet and Gray, averaging 16.8 and 14.2 ppg, respectively.
•Of McKinney's 20 points in the win over Anderson, 15 of them came from behind the arc as she was 5-of-8 in game to push her season-high totals to 30-for-79 (.380) from behind the three-line.
•McKinney is also averaging 5.2 rpg, while having totals of 19 assists and 11 steals.
•Bulcher is averaging a double-double with her 12.4 rebounds per game. She has seven double-figure rebounding games, including a 22-board effort at Wingate (Dec. 4). Overall she has seven double doubles on the season.
•The Scarlet and Gray are 7-2 in non-conference games this year, while sitting at 3-1 in road games, with their last one coming at Lander, a 74-63 loss.
•The Scarlet and Gray are outscoring their opponents by 15 points and holding the opposition to 34.3 percent shooting from the floor.
