DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) continue her sizzling scoring touch, netting her team-leading sixth and seventh goals of the year in pacing the Davidson women's soccer team to a stellar 4-0 shutout win over Wofford on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
The senior forward was one of three 'Cats to find the back of the net as junior Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Elizabeth Underwood (Atlanta, Ga.) also netted their second and first goals, respectively, on the year. Senior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) recorded her team-best fourth assist on Underwood's score.
Davidson rattled off its fourth win in the last five contests, all against SoCon-foes, to improve to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in league play. Wofford saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end, falling to 3-11-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the SoCon.
Low has played a big part during the Wildcats' run, scoring four times in the last five games and tallying three-game winners in that stretch. The four goals on the night by the 'Cats were one away from a season-high as they netted five in win on Sept. 6 vs. Francis Marion.
Low got things rolling in spectacular fashion during the 27th minute when she took the ball just outside the middle of the 18-yard box, spun around her defender and split two more Wofford defenders on her way into the box. Low then fired off a shot that was blocked by Wofford's goalkeeper Katie McChesney, but the rebound went into the air near Low, who charged at the ball and headed it out of the air to the near post for a 1-0 Davidson lead.
Just three minutes later, Low struck again for the Wildcats' second goal of the half at the 30:05 mark. The senior got a throw in on the far side of the field and dribbled into the right corner of the 18-yard box. From there, she drilled a shot across the box to the far post past a diving McChesney for her second score and 2-0 Wildcat advantage.
Davidson wasn't done, as Drutchas got her second goal of the year on a unique play in the 37th minute. After the 'Cats earned a foul on the near sideline down on Wofford's side, the junior lined up for a free kick. She sent a low liner that looked to be intended for Rachael Newmister (Clover, S.C.), but the ball was let through and went all the way to the far right-side post untouched, bouncing off the post and into the back of the net for a 3-0 halftime lead.
While the offense was clicking, the Wildcat defense did their part as well, halting any scoring ideas when Wofford attacked by stealing and forcing bad passes, clearing out corner kicks, and playing lock-down defense. The shutout was the 'Cats fifth of the year and third in the last four contests.
Wofford got off just three shots on the night, putting all three on goal as senior goalkeeper Loring Ward (Charleston, S.C.) saved all three attempts.
The Terriers nearly broke up the shutout in the 79th minute when it appeared they had scored in the six-yard box, but were whistle for offsides.
Underwood capped off the scoring night for Davidson with 78:43 on the clock when she headed in her first career collegiate goal off a cross sent in by Bye-Nagel to the far post for the final score of 4-0.
McChesney closed with six saves and two Wofford defenders also stopped a shot apiece. Davidson put 12 shots on goal out of its 19 total attempts.
Davidson will now gear up for a 2 p.m. contest against rival Furman on Sunday at Alumni Stadium.
