DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team kept up their winning ways, netting their third straight victory, and fifth in the last six contests, when senior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) headed in the game-winner in the 51st minute to earn a 1-0 shutout win over visiting rival Furman on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Davidson, which defeated Wofford (4-0) on Friday night, finished with a perfect weekend to improve to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in Southern Conference play. Of the 'Cats last five wins, four of them have come at the friendly confines of Alumni Stadium where they are 5-3 on the season. The win also avenged a 1-0 setback on their home field to the Paladins last year in the SoCon Tournament that end the Wildcats' season.
Furman, which was tied with Davidson in the league standings, fell to 4-4 in SoCon play, while seeing its overall mark drop to 10-5.
After a scoreless first half, which saw Furman control possession the majority of the half and outshoot Davidson, 4-1, the Wildcats came out of the gates recharged and more aggressive, resulting in the only score of the game six minutes into the new period.
Junior Callan Elswick (Locust Grove, Va.) beat her defender down on the near right sideline and drove toward the box. She sent a perfect cross into the middle of the six-yard box, where a streaking Bye-Nagel raced in and headed the ball to the near post that bounced once and past the goalline for her fourth goal of the season at the 51:48 mark. The score was the senior's second game-winning goal of the year and seventh in her career.
The Wildcat defense along with goalkeeper Loring Ward (Charleston, S.C.) then played lock-down defense the remainder of the second half to earn the shutout win, their third straight shutout and sixth of the season.
It was the third shutout win for Ward as the senior, who was credited with three saves in the game, improved to 4-4 between the pipes. Furman's Jessica Smith also had three saves in the contest.
For the game, Davidson finished with a one shot advantage, 11-10, while both teams had four corner kicks each. Furman had three of those corners from the 68th minute until the final horn, but Davidson halted any scoring chances off those corners by clearing out each attempt.
Davidson will take its three-game winning streak to the road for one last time when it heads to play at Chattanooga (Oct. 23) and Samford (Oct. 25) next weekend.
