DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) kept the Wildcats' winning streak rolling along with her second career hat trick, including back-to-back goals that tied the game and then put Davidson ahead for good as the women's soccer team rattled off its fourth straight win with a 4-2 road win at Chattanooga in Southern Conference action on Friday evening.
Davidson, winners of six of its last seven games, evened its record at 9-9 overall and ran its league mark to 6-3. Of the 'Cats last six wins, they have outscored the opposition 14-5 with four shutouts. The win also gave them an all-time mark of 14-1-1 against the Mocs, who fell to 6-7-1 overall and 1-7-1 in the SoCon.
Bye-Nagel, who started the scoring with a goal three minutes into the game, registered her fifth, sixth and seventh scores of the season to tie fellow classmate Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) for the team lead. In addition to her seven goals, she also has assisted on four others to give her a team-high 18 points, seven away from matching her career-best.
The senior was not alone in helping the 'Cats to the win as senior Courtney Hart (Ashland, Mass.) set up two of Bye-Nagel's goals with her first two assists of the season, while junior Callan Elswick (Locust Grove, Va.) set up the other. Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) closed out the scoring with the Wildcats' first penalty kick of the season at the 56:49 mark on the clock.
After Davidson's first goal saw Hart send a pass to Bye-Nagel in front of the goal where she slipped the ball past UTC keeper Taylor Davidson, the Mocs would knot it up on Becca Smith's 11th goal of the season in the 10th minute off a pass from Donna-Kay Henry.
Henry then gave the Mocs a 2-1 lead when she weaved through the Wildcat defense and netted her eighth score of the season with 36:01 on the clock.
That lead would be short-lived though, thanks to Bye-Nagel. Just five minutes later, the senior forward would tie it up at 2-all by taking a cross from Elswick in the 41st minute and finding the back of the net to send both teams into halftime tied.
The second half would belong to the Wildcats, outshooting Chattanooga 13-3 in the period and netting the final two goals of the game.
The game-winner by Bye-Nagel came in the 56th minute. She received a pass from Hart and drilled in the third Davidson goal at the 56:18 mark. The game-winner pushed her season total to three and gave her eight for her career. She also netted the game-winner in last year's 5-0 win over Chattanooga.
Davidson tacked on a penalty kick by Drutchas seconds later following a foul in the box to seal the win at 4-2.
The Wildcats got off a game-best 23 shots, putting 12 of them on goal as they kept the Mocs' Davidson very busy between the pipes. She finished with eight saves in 90 minutes of action.
Loring Ward (Charleston, S.C.) started in goal for Davidson and then was followed by sophomore Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield, Mich.), who saved two of the Mocs nine shots, to close out the win.
Davidson closes out its 2009 road schedule with a trip to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Samford in a key SoCon match on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both teams are battling for one of the top-four spots in the standings to advance to the league tournament in two weeks.
