DAVIDSON, N.C. -- On Senior Day in Cannon Natatorium, the Davidson Wildcats swept the competition, picking up a pair of wins over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs behind strong performances from seniors Alanna Ream and Merritt Peele.
The Wildcat women downed the Bulldogs, 162-126, and the Wildcat men posted a 168-111 victory.
"These were two nice victories today," Head Coach John Young said. "Gardner-Webb is one of the better teams in our conference, and stepping up and taking control of the meets, on Senior Day, should feel good for our athletes. We've still got work to do before CCSAs, but we are on the right track."
The team honored its seniors before the meet, and they carried that momentum into competition. Ream won the 200 fly with a time of 2:11.24, and classmate Madeline Parra finished third in the event with a time of 2:11.90. Ream also finished third in the 500 with a time of 5:13.24.
"Madeline Parra's third-place finish in that event was a season-best time that marks great improvement in her recovery from off-season surgery," Young said. "Courtney Sanders was big for us in the sprints."
Sanders finished third in the 50 with a time of 25.02 and second in the 100 free with a time of 54.05. Parra finished fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.78, and classmate Jessica Totten was fourth in the 50 free with a time of 26.00.
Stephannie McKinney won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events, with scores of 208.51 and 203.56, respectively.
Other individual winners on the women's side included Jessica Delgehausen (the 1000 free, 10:23.44; 500 free, 5:06.28), Anna Stringfield (200 free, 1:54.05) and Emily Castle (100 fly, 58.20).
In the men's competition, the seniors also swam well. Peele won the 1000 free (9:51.99) minutes before scoring with a third place in the 200 free (1:46.53). He also won the 500 free with a time of 4:48.47.
Classmate Scott Frantz won the 100 back (52.40), and scored with his third-place finish in the 100 free (48.74). In the latter event, the Wildcats turned in a 1-2-3 finish, with Andrew Carlson grabbing points with his second-place finish (48.60).
In addition to wins by Peele and Frantz, Curtis Chaney, Patrick Whitman, Geoff Peitz, Miller Williams and Ben Lane all won individual events. Lane reset his college record on the 3-meter board with a zone-qualifying diving score of 342.75 points.
The Wildcats will host VMI on Wed., Jan. 28, in their final regular-season meet, before heading to Athens, Ga., for the 2009 CCSA Championships. The Wildcat women hope to defend their championship and the men will seek to improve on their runner-up finish from a season ago.
