STATESBORO, Ga. – Behind four pool records and a pair of wins from sophomore Jessica Delgehausen, the Wildcat women's swimming and diving team downed Georgia Southern, 123-118, in CCSA conference action Saturday afternoon at the RAC.
The Wildcat women kicked off their record-setting with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay, as sophomore Anna Stringfield, junior Caroline Curtiss, sophomore Emily Castle and senior Courtney Sanders finished with a time of 3:59.63.
“Our pool-record-setting relay was a great start to the meet for us,” head coach John Young said. “Emily Castle and Courtney Sanders had impressive splits to bring us home strong.”
Delgehausen set a pair of pool records with a pair of wins, finishing with a first-place time of 10:22.13 in the 1000 free and 5:03.64 in the 500 free. Her time in the 1000 free is an all-time fastest in dual-meet competition.
“Jessica Delgehausen was outstanding in her two individual event victories today,” Young said. “She is carrying momentum from stroke to stroke so efficiently; it is very fun to watch.”
Junior Caitlin Sheetz followed with a runner-up time of 5:07.83 in the 500 free, nearly bettering her lifetime best in the event.
Sophomore Lindsey Martin set the final pool record for the Wildcats, winning the 100 free with a time of 52.48. Sanders finished second in the event with a time of 52.63.
“Even under the weather, Lindsey took care of business, setting a pool record in the 100,” Young said. “Courtney was also outstanding, swimming under the old pool record, and nearly bettering her lifetime best time, as we scored the 1-2 finish.”
After contributing in the relays, Stringfield also won an individual title, swimming a time of 1:54.56 in the 200 free.
Junior Linnea Buttermore turned in the 'Cats' final win of the day, finishing with the top mark of 209.10 on the 1-meter dive.
“Our women took a nice step towards CCSA championship competition today,” Young said. “Georgia Southern was excited to host us, and our women raced well. And we embraced a chance to support our fellow Wildcats, cheering like crazy as our men's basketball won in Statesboro, too. All in all, a great day to be a Wildcat!”
With the dual-meet win, the Wildcats improve to 8-7 in the all-time series with the Eagles and 6-1 in all-time CCSA competition. The Wildcats will return to action, hosting Gardner-Webb Saturday at Cannon Natatorium.
