DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's soccer team will kick off a four-match road trip this Tuesday night when they head to Durham, N.C. to take on the 21st-ranked Duke Blue Devils at Koskinen Stadium.
This will be the 42nd meeting all-time between the two schools, with the first coming back in 1956. Duke currently holds a 32-7-2 lead in the series, and has won the last two matches. In 2003, Davidson defeated the Blue Devils, 2-0, at Davidson's Richardson Stadium. It was Head Coach Matt Spear's second win over Duke in his time as a part of the Wildcat program. Spear played in the 1990 match that Davidson won 3-2, which was the last victory for the team in Koskinen Stadium. Last season, Duke took home a 2-0 victory at Alumni Stadium.
“We are very excited to play Duke,” Spear said. “This is always a match that every Davidson student-athlete and alumnus relishes due to Duke's similarly strong academic and athletic heritage”
After dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to High Point on Saturday night, the 'Cats now stand at 1-4 overall on the season. Sophomore Alex Caskey scored his first goal of the season in the match, and also assisted on Clinton Smith's goal. Overall, junior Machel Turner leads the team with a pair of scores, and is tied with Caskey for the team lead in points with four. The Wildcats have two goalkeepers who have made appearances on the year, with junior Robby Goldsberry holding a 1-2 record in his four matches, with 15 saves and a save percentage of .625. Sophomore Matt McElroy, who has six saves this season, notched a career-high 11 stops in the match against Duke last year.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 3-1 victory over ACC-foe Virginia Tech, and climbed to No. 21 in the latest Soccer America poll this week 3-2 record. Senior Mike Grella leads the offense with five goals and one assist for a total of 11 point on the season. The Hermann Trophy candidate also has two of the team's three game-winners, including a pair of scores against VT. They are coached by John Kerr, who took over the helm this fall after previous coach John Rennie retired following 29 years leading the program. Kerr, who is in the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame, was the National Player of the Year on The Devils' 1986 National Champion team.
Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday night, and fans can follow all the action via live stats, which can be found on the Duke Athletic's website, GoDuke.com.
