DAVIDSON, N.C. - Sophomore Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) extended her singles winning streak to 10th straight with a win at the No. 5 position as she helped the Davidson women's tennis team make it two straight Southern Conference wins with a 6-1 triumph over visiting UNC Greensboro on Thursday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Wildcats, who defeated Elon on Wednesday, ran their overall mark to 14-4 and saw its SoCon record run to 6-1. In addition, Davidson remained perfect at home in improving to 8-0 on the year. UNCG dropped to 7-9 overall and an even 3-3 in SoCon matches.
Davidson opened the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles take a 1-0 lead in team points. Wang led the No. 2 doubles team with junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) to take home an 8-1 win, and freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) scored their second straight win as a pair by following with an 8-6 victory at No. 3.
Wang then led the charge in singles play. Coming off a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at Elon on Wednesday, the sophomore needed a third set to pick up her 10th singles victory in a row. After falling 6-1 in the first set, the sophomore came back to score a 6-3 victory in the next set against Erica Zabkar, and then closed out her match with a 6-1 win to run her singles record to 11-1 and a perfect 5-0 in league action. She is one singles win away from tying her 12 wins as a freshman last year.
After seeing her team season-high 11-match win streak snapped at College of Charleston in her previous match, senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.), in her return trip back home, got back on the winning track by not allowing a single game to Courtney Akel in a two-set sweep at No. 6.
Both Fanney and Whelan won their sixth conference matches of the season with victories at No. 3 and 4, while sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) became the sixth Wildcat to move into double digits in wins in singles action with a three-set decision over Arielle VonStrolley at the No. 2 position. Berry dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, but regrouped with a 6-0 win in the second set before capturing a 6-3 win in the last set.
UNC Greensboro's lone point came from Alejandra Guerra, who is coming off SoCon Player of the Week honors, with a win at No. 1 singles.
The Wildcats stay at home when they host Boston U. on Apr. 5 at 11 a.m. in their first-ever meeting against the Terriers.
