CHARLESTON, S.C. - In their bid to win the program's first Southern Conference tournament title, the Davidson women's tennis team came up just short as the Wildcats fell 4-0 to No. 1-seeded Furman in the championship match on Sunday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, SC.
Davidson, who reached the finals for the third time in the past four years and facing the Paladins in each of those trips, concluded its season with a record of 19-6 for its fifth straight campaign with over 17 wins. With the victory, Furman earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA championships which begin May 9-10. The Paladins improved to 19-5 overall as they captured their fifth consecutive and sixteenth overall tournament championship.
Furman grabbed a 1-0 lead to open the match after taking wins at the No. 1 and 2 doubles. Senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) nearly pulled out their win at No. 1 as they fell just short, 9-7.
Laura Gioia and Lauren Osborne pushed the Paladin lead to 3-0 with two straight-set wins over Linville and junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) in singles play. Linville, who went 2-1 at the tournament, closed out her senior year at 14-9 and ended her career with 75 singles wins.
The Wildcats' title chances were halted when Jessica Preeg took a 6-0, 6-1 win over senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) at No. 4 singles to finish off the match at 4-0. Whelan ended her Wildcat senior campaign with a team-high 17 wins and earned 76 for her four-year playing career.
Senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) also played in her final match and received a no decision after the match had been decided. The winner of this year's SoCon Sportsmanship Award, Skeeters concluded her senior season with a 15-3 overall singles mark to push her career record to 45-21.
The 2008 NCAA Division I women's tennis selection announcements will air between 2 and 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, on ESPNews.
