Louisville Escapes With 13-12 Win over Wildcat Lacrosse

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –– Despite placing seven players in the books with at least one goal, Davidson could not hold off a late Louisville rally in the closing minutes when Brittany Poist scored the game-winning goal with 2:46 remaining as the Wildcats dropped a 13-12 road decision to the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wildcats dropped their second straight in falling to 10-5 on the year, with one more game left in the season. Louisville ran its winning streak to three in a row to improve to 10-4.
After trailing for most of the second half, the Cards (10-4) evened the game at 12-12 with 4:42 to go as Shayna Stearns scored on an assist from Poist, and less than two minutes later Poist's unassisted goal gave the Cards the lead for good. Overall, the game featured four lead changes and nine ties.
Senior Emily Diefendorf (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) paced Davidson with three goals to push her season total to 32. Three other Wildcats added two goals apiece led by sophomore Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.Y.), who has a team-leading 33 goals on the year. Senior Sarah Walter (Queenstown, Md.) added to her team-high assist total of 10 with one and also scored a goal.
Trailing 8-6 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, junior Becky Horton (Walnut Creek, Calif.) started a four-goal rally by the 'Cats that carried into the beginning of the second period with an unassisted score at the 4:27 mark. Horton also added two assists for three points on the afternoon.
Following Horton's goal, senior Emily Palmer (Columbus, Ohio) knotted things up at 8-apiece before halftime when she scored her 15th goal of the season with 2:25 left before intermission.
Then Diefendorf scored two of her three goals to start the new period and Davidson had a 10-8 lead.
Davidson held a two-goal lead until the 18th and 16th minutes when the Cardinals tied things up with back-to-back goals, but later sophomore Haley Cook (Darien, Conn.) gave the Wildcats their final lead at 12-11 with a goal at the 10:45 mark.
Emily Dashiell scored a career-best five goals to lead the Cardinal attack, while Poist (3) and Liz Lovejoy (2) also had multi-goal games.
Senior Laura Johnson (Baldwin, Md.) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded seven saves, while Jen Heup earned the win between the pipes for Louisville with eight saves.
Both teams were nearly identical in all team statistical categories, including shots (32-32) and ground balls (12-12). Louisville earned one more draw control at 14-13 and were successful on all of their clear-attempts.
Davidson concludes the 2008 season when it returns home for Senior Day as it hosts Howard on Apr. 26 for a 1 p.m. contest.
