
No. 6 South Carolina Tops Davidson 9-2

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Matt Webb, Tommy Piacenza and Matt Ray each had a hit but Davidson could only score two runs in a 9-2 setback at No. 6 South Carolina Wednesday night.
South Carolina (20-7) erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of two Reese Havens doubles and a three-run home run from James Darnell. Two Davidson errors also helped to extend the inning.
The Wildcats (8-15) got one back in the third as Ray led off with a single, Zach Kayne drew a two-out walk and Webb followed with an infield single.
Chase FitzPatrick walked with the bases loaded to make the score 7-1,and Davidson made the margin 7-2 in the sixth when Ray was plunked with the bases loaded. The Gamecocks added two in the eighth inning for the final margin.
The 'Cats got a strong outing from relief pitcher Brant West, who threw 4.2 scoreless innings and scattered five hits. Matt Sliwiak kept the 'Cats within striking distance by throwing 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out two batters.
Davidson returns to action with a three-game SoCon series at Western Carolina, beginning Friday.
