
Davidson M. Tennis to Open SoCon Tourney vs. App. State

DAVIDSON, N.C. – In search of their 10th Southern Conference tournament title, the No. 5-seeded Davidson men's tennis team will open the Southern Conference tournament on Friday, Apr. 18 against No. 4 Appalachian State at 10 a.m. in the quarterfinals.
The Wildcats concluded the regular season with a mark of 14-7 overall and 5-4 in SoCon action. The 14 wins were the most since the 1999 sqaud went 15-9, and of the 14 wins, 10 of them came at home where the 'Cats were 10-2 on the year.
Davidson will be seeking some payback against Appalachian State after dropping a 4-3 road contest on Apr. 11. The doubles point was the difference were the Mountaineers swept all three positions.
The Mountaineers finished with a record of 5-4 as well in league matches and was 12-9 overall. The received the fourth seed by earning the win over Davidson.
The last time the two teams met in the tournament was in 2005 when ASU took a 4-3 decision in the first round.
Leading the way for the Wildcats this year in singles play has been junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) with a team-leading 17 victories. He closed out his league matches a perfect 9-0, finishing off his perfect run with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Furman on Saturday.
Four 'Cats in all finished with over 10 singles wins as senior Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania), freshman Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.), and sophomore Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) joined Myers. As a team, Davidson went 75-52 overall in singles play.
The team of Simihaian and junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) paced the team in doubles play with an 11-6 mark at No. 1 doubles. Lyons and Burns were next with an 8-7 mark.
Should Davidson advance to the semifinals, it would play the winner of No. 1 Furman and No. 8 Chattanooga/No. 9 Charleston on Apr. 19 at 8:30 a.m.
