DAVIDSON, N.C. – In its final tune-up before the Southern Conference tournament, the Davidson men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback on Senior Day against No. 69 Furman on Saturday afternoon in SoCon men's tennis action at Covington Tennis Courts.
The senior duo of Flaviu Simihaian and Phillip Compeau each played their final match at home.
The Wildcats wrapped up the regular season with a 14-7 record overall and 5-4 in league play. The Paladins closed out its league schedule undefeated at 9-0 and improved to 13-10 overall.
Furman started the match off by sweeping the doubles play against the Wildcats to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Following the doubles play, freshman Walker Lyons and junior Scott Myers were able to put the 'Cats on the board with singles wins at No. 4 and 6. Furman though, captured wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 to seal the 5-2 win.
Lyons picked up his 12th singles win of the season with a two-set, 7-6, 6-1 victory over Chris Motes at No. 4. He ran his record at the No. 4 position to 9-5 on the year.
Myers capped off a solid junior campaign by running his SoCon record to a perfect 9-0 mark with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Sawyer Duncan. The junior has a team-best record of 17-4 after finishing the weekend 2-0.
Davidson now gears up for the SoCon tournament on Apr. 19 in Charleston, S.C.
