Wildcat Women Win Inaugural CCSA Championship, Men, Second

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — As competition concluded on Saturday evening, the Davidson Wildcat women took home the inaugural title at the 2008 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships with 846 points, while the Wildcat men finished in second place.
Davidson head coach John Young was named women's coach of the year. In just his second year as head coach, Young led his team to the inaugural CCSA title and a 7-7 overall regular season record. College of Charleston coach Bruce Zimmerman won the honors on the men's side for leading the Cougars to the championship.
On the final day of competition, freshman Lindsey Martin had the top time of the prelims (51.52) in the 100 free to advance to the championship final, and in the evening session, the school-record holder won the heat with a time of 51.12, her second individual title of the meet, along with a victory in the 50 free.
The Wildcat's 400 freestyle team of senior Fiete Stegger, junior Miguel Rodriguez, junior Scott Frantz and junior Merritt Peele finished first in a school-record time 3:03.40. The Wildcat women completed the sweep, as the team of junior Courtney Sanders, freshman Emily Castle, freshman Anna Stringfield and Martin finished first in a school-record time of 3:28.52.
The Wildcats set three more school records on the final day of competition, as Frantz and Stegger bettered their own school records. Frantz advanced to the championship final with a time of 1:53.26 in the prelims and won the heat with a school-record time of 1:49.55 to become the Wildcats' fifth individual champion. Stegger was second in the 100 free prelims with a time of 47.25 to advance to the championship final and finished with a runner-up, school-record time of 46.43 in the nightcap. Junior Alanna Ream finished third in the 1650 freestyle with a school-record time of 17:08.63. Her split in the 1000 free is also a new school record.
The Wildcats earned 23 swims in the evening session on Saturday. The women placed five swimmers into championship heats and five into consolation finals, while the Wildcat men put eight into the finals and four into the consolation heats.
Stringfield had the morning's third best time (2:06.81) to earn a spot in the championship final of the 200 backstroke, and she finished in the same spot in the evening session with a time of 2:06.13.
Senior Kirsten Allen also competed in the championship final of the 100 free, finishing eighth with a time of 53.77. Sanders (53.28) and Castle (53.41) earned spots in the consolation final and finished ninth (52.70) and tenth (53.12), respectively.
Rodriguez finished third in 100 free championship final with a time of 46.81, while sophomore Brad Carman placed eighth in the championship final (48.57). Freshman Patrick Whitman (10th, 48.04), junior Andrew Carlson (11th, 48.22), freshman Tennant Brastow (13th, 48.74) and freshman Bryan Droll (15th, 49.38) represented the 'Cats in the consolation final.
Freshman Ineke Stegger (2:27.78), senior Maddie Stough (2:29.22) and sophomore Caroline Curtiss (2:29.82) each qualified for the consolation final in the 200 breaststroke. Stegger and Curtiss finished first and second in the consolation final in the nightcap. Stegger finished ninth with a time of 2:25.23, Curtiss, 10th in 2:28.89. Senior Maddie Stough also competed for Davidson in the consolation, placing 13th with a time of 2:29.64.
Sophomore Nate Ladner swam the second-best time in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.41) in the morning session and finished with a runner-up time of 2:08.03 in the championship final. Freshman Ben Lucas also competed in the heat for the 'Cats, finishing sixth with a time of 2:14.30.
Freshman Casey Gemunder was sixth in the 200 fly prelims (2:09.89) and earned a spot in the championship final, as did junior Madeline Parra (2:10.71).
Senior Robb Broughton (1:56.08), senior Adam Topaz (1:56.39) and sophomore Miller Williams (1:57.14) each advanced to the championship final in the 200 fly. Williams had the team's top time in the final heat, placing third in 1:54.11, followed immediately by Broughton (1:56.05) and Topaz (1:56.96).
Sophomore Caitlin Sheetz finished sixth in the event with a time of 17:32.21. Peele finished second in the event with a time of 16:12.23, followed by senior Will Broughton (16:22.46).
