HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — At the end of the second day of competition at the 2008 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships, the Wildcat women remain in the lead with 444 points, and the men, in a close second with 510 points.
The men trail the College of Charleston, who have amassed 569 points, and are ahead of Gardner-Webb, in third with 447 points. The women are leading Gardner-Webb (426.5) and Florida Gulf Coast (398.5).
On the second day of competition, the Wildcats set another school record to bring the two-day total up to six and added a pair of individual championships and two relay wins. The 200 medley relay men's team of junior Scott Frantz, sophomore Nate Ladner, sophomore Miller Williams and senior Fiete Stegger finished second in a school-record time of 1:32.88, and the Wildcats swept the 800 freestyle relays. Freshman Anna Stringfield won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:28.42, and junior Merritt Peele became the 'Cats fourth conference champion with a win in the 200 free in a time of 1:42.14.
Stringfield won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:28.42 after swimming the morning's top time as well. Freshman Ineke Stegger and senior Alanna Ream, who finished fourth (4:34.41) and seventh (4:39.66) in the finals heat, respectively, and freshman Casey Gemunder finished 14th in the consolation final with a time of 4:43.73.
Peele had the morning's top time in the 200 free (1:42.54) to nab a place in the championship final, along with junior Andrew Carlson (1:44.20). In the nightcap, the pair went one and two, with Peele winning the individual championship with a time of 1:42.14, and Carlson just behind in a time of 1:43.35.
The women's 800 freestyle relay team of Stringfield, junior Courtney Sanders, sophomore Caitlin Sheetz and freshman Jessica Delgehausen finished first with a time of 7:36.75, and the men's team of senior Will Broughton, junior Andrew Carlson, senior Adam Topaz and Peele won the event with a time of 6:55.25.
Freshman Ben Lucas had the Wildcats' top time in the 400 individual medley in the morning prelims, finishing fourth with a time of 4:15.67, and senior Adam Topaz finished eighth with a time of 4:17.61 to advance to the championship final. Topaz finished third in the evening session with a time of 4:11.18, and Lucas was seventh with a time of 4:16.89. Senior Will Broughton finished with a time of 4:18.56 in the prelims and represented the 'Cats in the consolation final, which he won with a time of 4:14.64.
Three Wildcat women advanced to the championship finals of the 100 fly, as freshman Emily Castle, Sanders and junior Jessica Totten finished second, fourth and eighth in the prelims, respectively. The school-record holder in the event, Castle finished third in the finals with a time of 57.88, followed immediately by Sanders (57.96). Totten finished seventh with a time of 59.43 in the championship final. Senior Leslie Sherrill earned a spot in the consolation final with a time of 59.40 in the prelims and finished 12th (59.55).
Williams had the fourth best time (51.58) in the 100 fly in the morning session and finished in the same spot in the nightcap with a time of 51.62. Sophomore Brad Carman and senior Robb Broughton also represented the Wildcats in the championship final and finished in fifth (52.08) and seventh (52.92). Freshman Patrick Whitman finished 11th with a time of 53.12 in the prelims to earn a place in the consolation final and placed 10th in the heat with a time of 52.34.
In the 200 freestyle, Delgehausen swam a 1:53.82 in the morning session to advance to the championship heat, along with classmate Lindsey Martin (1:54.64). Martin touched second in the evening session with a school-record time of 1:52.92, while Delgehausen was fourth in 1:53.06. Senior Kirsten Allen (1:55.79) and Sheetz (1:56.87) posted times that put them in the consolation final, and they tied for third in the evening's swim with a time of 1:56.95.
Sophmore Caroline Curtiss swam the seventh-best time in the prelims to advance to the championship heat of the 100 breaststroke, while senior Maddie Stough (1:08.79) qualified for the consolation final. Curtiss finished in eighth place with a time of 1:08.31, and Stough was 12th in 1:08.97. On the men's side, sophomore Nate Ladner had the second-best time in the prelims (57.15) to move into the championship final with senior Fiete Stegger (59.86). Ladner was second in the evening session with a time of 57.36, and Stegger finished fourth in 59.30.
Frantz was second in the 100 back with a time of 50.43, and freshman Tennant Brastow finished sixth in the championship final with a time of 53.49, and junior Miguel Rodriguez was eighth with a time of 55.42.
The women's 400 medley team of senior Kirsten Allen, sophomore Caroline Curtiss, Castle and classmate Lindsey Martin finished in fourth with a time of 1:47.45.
Competition will conclude tomorrow, with prelims scheduled for 10 a.m. and finals set for 6 p.m.
