
Wildcat Women Leading, Men, Second After Day One at CCSA Championships

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — With the first day of competition complete, the Wildcat women are in the lead at the first-annual Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships, while the men are in a close second.
The women have collected 221 points, followed by Florida Gulf Coast (205) and Gardner-Webb (163). With 241 points, the Davidson men are closely behind the College of Charleston, leading with 251 points, and Gardner-Webb is third with 153 points.
On the first day of competition, the Wildcats set five new school records and won a pair of conference titles. Both the men's and women's 200 freestyle relays matched the school record in the prelims and bettered it in the evening session, and the men's 400 medley relay team of junior Scott Frantz, sophomore Nate Ladner, sophomore Miller Williams and senior Fiete Stegger bettered their own school mark. Junior Alanna Ream won the consolation final of the 500 free with a new school record time of 5:00.02, bettering her own record, and Stegger rewrote his own record in the 50 free with a swim of 21.10 in the prelims. Freshman Lindsey Martin won the 50 free with a time of 23.62, while junior Andrew Carlson won the 500 free with a time of 4:38.03.
In the morning session, the Wildcats combined to earn 26 swims in the finals. The women's team placed sixth swimmers in the championship final and four in the consolation final, while the men's team earned 11 spots in the championship finals and four in the consolation heat.
The Wildcats "A" and "B" teams turned in the two top times in the prelims of the 200 freestyle relay. The "A" team matched its own school-record time, finishing in 1:36.89, while the "B" team was second with a time of 1:37.12. Later in the evening, the "A" team of senior Kirsten Allen and freshmen Martin, Alexa Richardson and Emily Castle bettered that record with a runner-up time of 1:36.35.
The Wildcat men also matched their school record and had the top time in the prelims for the 200 freestyle relay, finishing in 1:24.48. In the evening session, the "A" team of sophomore Miller Williams, freshman Patrick Whitman, junior Miguel Rodriguez and Stegger also improved their record with a runner-up time of 1:24.07.
Freshman Jessica Delgehausen finished sixth a time of 5:03.47 to earn a spot in the finals in the 500 freestyle, where she finished fourth with a time of 5:02.32. Ream (5:05.53), sophomore Caitlin Sheetz (5:06.74) and freshman Casey Gemunder (5:11.72) earned spots in the consolation final. The school-record holder in the event, Ream won the consolation final and set a new school record in the event with a time of 5:00.02. Sheetz finished 12th with a time of 5:06.30 in the consolation final, while Gemunder was 16th with a time of 5:16.76.
The Davidson men had the two top times in the prelims of the 500 freestyle and the top three times in the championship final. Senior Will Broughton had the top time in the morning session, finishing in 4:42.56, followed immediately by Carlson (4:44.79). Junior Merritt Peele also earned a spot in the finals with the sixth-best time of 4:48.72. In the evening session, Carlson won the championship heat with a time of 4:38.03, followed closely by Broughton (4:39.49) and Peele (4:40.26). Senior Robb Broughton earned a place in the consolation final with a time of 5:02.55 in the prelims, and he finished 13th with a time of 4:58.81.
Freshmen Anna Stringfield and Ineke Stegger nabbed spots in the finals for the 200 IM, finishing with times of 2:10.21 (4th) and 2:10.74 (5th) in the prelims, respectively. Stringfield had the top time in the evening session for the 'Cats, finishing fifth with a time of 2:08.74, while Stegger placed sixth with a time of 2:09.24.
Sophomore Nate Ladner had the second-best time in the 200 IM (1:55.25) to qualify for the finals, along with senior Adam Topaz (1:56.78) and freshman Tennant Brastow (1:58.39). Ladner finished third in the championship final with a time of 1:54.34, followed by Topaz with a fourth-place time of 1:56.53. Brastow was eighth with a time of 1:57.95. Freshman Ben Lucas finished with the 11th-best time (2:01.27) to earn a spot in the consolation final, where he finished 12th with a time of 1:59.92.
Martin had the top time in the 50 free (23.76) advancing to the finals along with senior Kirsten Allen (24.42) and freshman Alexa Richardson (24.48). Junior Courtney Sanders (24.68) and freshman Emily Castle (24.69) earned spots in the consolation. Martin won the event in the evening session with a time of 23.62, and Sanders and Castle tied for the top time in the consolation final (24.41).
Stegger broke his school record in the 50 free with the morning's best time (21.10) to advance to the finals, where he finished third with a time of 21.20. Freshman Patrick Whitman (21.13), junior Miguel Rodriguez (21.63), and sophomore Miller Williams (21.76) also earned spots in the final heat. Rodriguez (21.65), Williams (21.76) and Whitman (21.81) placed fifth, sixth and seventh in the championships final. Junior Scott Frantz (21.88), junior Brad Carman (22.07), and freshman Bryan Droll (22.51) advanced to the consolation final, where they finished 10th, 12th and 15th, respectively.
The men's "A" team had the best time (3:26.95) in the 400 medley relay prelims, and the "B" team was third (3:32.54). In the evening session, the team of Frantz, Ladner, Williams and Stegger was edged out by Charleston and finished with a runner-up, school-record time of 3:24.81. The women had the third-best time in the morning's 400 medley relay (3:58.67), while the "B" team was fifth with a time of 3:59.52. In the nightcap, the "A" team of Stringfield, sophomore Caroline Curtiss, Castle and Martin placed fourth with a time of 3:58.75.
In the diving events, sophomore Linnea Buttermore placed third with a score of 218.95, while classmate Kelsey Chisholm was fifth (203.20), and junior Stephannie McKinney placed eighth (197.45).
The CCSA Championships will continue tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m and conclude on Saturday.
