BOONE, N.C. -- Junior Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) showed why she led the league in three-point percentage last year by draining a school-record nine three-balls and finished with a new personal-best of 35 points as Davidson cruised to a 95-75 Southern Conference road win against Appalachian State in women's basketball action.
In addition to setting the school bench mark for three-pointers, Thompson also tied the single-game school record with her 35 points, matching Jennifer O'Brien (Mar. 3, 2000) and Heather McKee (Jan. 22, 1985). Her 12 attempts from behind the arc tied a single-game record, matching two other players.
Finally, the nine made three-pointers also set a SoCon single-game bench mark. It breaks the record of eight held by seven different players, most recently by Elon's Tierra Bumbrey on Feb. 11, 2008.
Thompson led four scorers in double figures, the first time this year the Wildcats have accomplished the feat as they picked up their second straight league win to improve to 2-0 in SoCon play and 3-5 overall. ASU, which had three players score in double digits, fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.
It was a day filled of highlights for the Wildcats, starting with sharp-shooting Thompson. The Wildcats starting point guard, who played all 40 minutes, hit 10-of-15 from the field, including 9-for-12 from behind the three-line, and added a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. She also hauled in six rebounds and dished out six assists.
The 35 points by Thompson were the most scored by a Wildcat since Emily Callahan dropped in 33 against Appalachian State on Jan. 18, 2003.
Davidson as a team matched a school record with 13 made shots from behind the three-line, which it had set back on Feb. 26, 2004 at Furman. The Wildcats finished 13-of-23 for the game, including 7-of-9 in the second half when the 'Cats built a lead as big as 24 points.
The highlights did not stop there as Davidson shot 60.7 percent (17-28) in the second half and was even better at the 15-foot line with a 16-of-19 showing to close the contest 24-for-33. The Wildcats set a team season-high from the field, shooting 46.8 percent.
Not to be over shadowed by Thompson's outstanding game, Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) recorded her third double-double of the year (13 points/10 rebounds) and Monica Laune (Ashland, Neb.) poured in a career-high 15 points, 13 of them in the second half, off the bench. Laune set personal bests in field goals (4), three-pointers (2) and free throws (5) made, as she closed out the scoring for Davidson, hitting for seven of the Wildcats' final nine points in the 20-point triumph.
Rounding out the four players in double figures was Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) with 12 points to go along with nine rebounds.
Thompson set the tone in the first half when she hit four three-pointers, including a 26-footer from the top of the circle to beat the horn before the half that gave Davidson a 38-33 lead heading into intermission. After missing a three-point try at the 13:21 mark in the first half, Thompson proceeded to finish the game a perfect 8-for-8 from downtown.
ASU's Brittany Mixon (12) and Brittney Spencer (10) kept the Mountaineers close in the first half by combining for 22 points, including eight straight at one time by Mixon that gave Appalachian State a brief 20-19 lead at the 6:44 mark.
Shortly thereafter, Thompson and Laune responded with back-to-back three-pointers that gave the 'Cats a 29-22 lead and Davidson never trailed the rest of the way.
Mixon finished with a double-double, her second in a row against Davidson as she had a team-best 24 points to go along with 14 rebounds. Spencer and Sam Ramirez each scored 16 and 19 points, respectively, to round out ASU's double-digit scorers.
The 'Cats head back home for two straight, starting with a 7 p.m. matchup against cross-county rival Charlotte on Tuesday, Dec. 9
Game Notes: The Wildcats snapped their five-game road losing streak with the win ... Freshman Logan Hartman had a solid game off the bench with a new personal-best nine points ... Davidson hit double figures in offensive rebounds (10) for the seventh time in the past eight games ... Last time Davidson hit the 90-point mark was Nov. 29, 2005, a 95-39 win over Oglethorpe.
