FARMVILLE, VA. - Junior Liz Luckey's game-winning goal in double overtime lifted the Davidson field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over rival Appalachian State in NorPac Tournament play Friday night in Farmville, Va. With the win, the Wildcats staved off elimination and advanced to the tournament's fifth-place game tomorrow morning, where they will face off against Radford.

For the second time in three meetings this season, Davidson and Appalachian State found themselves deadlocked at 2-2 going into double overtime. Only this time around, the season was on the line. For the winners, another day of action awaited tomorrow. For the losers, this would be the last time they stepped on the field for a game this year. The last time these two went into extra periods, the contest was decided on penalty strokes, with the Mountaineers coming out on top. But Friday night, it was the 'Cats who played the role of the victors.

In the 88th minute of play, 2:05 into the second extra period, senior Sara Stevens broke through the ASU?defense and took the ball down the left side of the field before dropping a pass to Luckey, who was trailing the action on the right side. Luckey collected the pass and maneuvered her way past the Mountaineer goalkeeper before knocking in the game-winner into an empty net for her first goal of the season. Stevens was credited with the assist, the first points of her career.

Davidson struck first in the game in the 19th minute, when sophomore Clare Perry knocked in her fifth goal of the season from the left side of the net off a penalty corner. Senior Britti Himelfarb, who was named to the NorPac All-Conference Team on Wednesday, recorded the assist, her sixth of the year and the 20th assist of her career, making her just the second player in school history with at least 20 career assists, joining former teammate Kayli Maxwell, who holds the record with 23.

The two teams went into halftime with the 'Cats holding a 1-0 lead, and dominating the offensive pace of the game. They out-shot Appalachian by a 10-2 margin in the first half, while taking six corners to ASU's three.

Seven minutes into the second frame, the Wildcats took a two-goal lead courtesy of senior Tyler Kirkland's rebounded goal, where she took a blocked shot by Luckey and recorded her sixth goal of the season. Kirkland, who was also named to the All-NorPac team and took home the Sheryl Johnson Academic Excellence Award from the conference, now sits in second place on squad for goals scored.

Appalachian mounted a comeback that would see them tie the game within the next 13 minutes of action, starting with Lauren Kloeppinger's unassisted goal at the 46:49 mark off a scramble in front of the goal. Then, in the 55th minute, the Mountaineers drew even when Katie Price gathered a rebounded shot, then passed over to teammate Jessie Harris, who found the back of the net to make the count 2-2, where it would stay for the remainder of regulation.

In the first overtime, the teams combined for five shots, with Davidson firing three of the attempts. Wildcat goalkeeper Brittany Rollek, who was in goal for the entire contest, made two saves in overtime, and finished the game with six stops. The only shot of the second overtime resulted in Luckey's game-winning score.

For the contest, Davidson out-shot ASU 22-12, and recorded ten penalty corners, with the Mountaineers taking seven. Luckey and Himelfarb both tied the for the game-high with five shot attempts, joining ten Wildcats who recorded shots in the game.

With the win, the 'Cats improve to 7-14 on the season, and move on to face off against the Radford Highlanders for fifth place in the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 8, with the game scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Appalachian State ends their season with a 2-17 overall mark.
