
Davidson M. Tennis Has Top-25 Class For 2013

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team will add three highly talented incoming freshmen next year as part of their recruiting class of 2013, announced today by head coach Drew Barrett.
The Wildcats will welcome Kevin Moore, Chris Mark and Joe Schafer to the Wildcat tennis program next year. The class was recently ranked in the top-25 of the nation according to tennisrecruiting.net.
“I am very excited for this year's recruiting class,” said Barrett, who is entering his third year. “They will add a significant amount of talent to an already talented team. These guys are not only great athletes but great people, and I'm looking forward to the coming years and our goal of winning a conference championship.”
Moore is a No. 1 singles player for Shawnee Mission North in Overland, Kan., where he has picked up numerous honors during his prep career. Ranked second in the Missouri Valley Sectional and 190th overall in the USTA national rankings in the 18-year old division, Moore is coming off a junior season that saw him finish second at the Kansas 6A state finals for the second time in his career. He picked up Kansas Coaches Association All-State team honors, along with first-team nods on the All-Metro, All-Star Johnson County and All-Sun boys tennis teams.
The senior prepster was a second-team All-Metro and All-Star Johnson County pick his sophomore season when he finished seventh at the state finals and was second overall at regionals.
Moore has also excelled in the classroom, ranking second in his class and has been named to the Principal's Honor Roll (4.0 GPA) three straight years. A National Honor Society and Quill & Scroll member, Moore has been part of the yearbook staff since 2005 as he was sports editor and won a number of awards last year, including the Quill & Scroll and Herff Jones Yearbook Excellence Contest Sweepstakes Winner for Sports.
Mark hails from Union City, Calif., where he reached No. 1 in singles and No. 2 in doubles in NorCal for the boys 18-year old division. He has already picked up two tournament titles this year: the Modesto Junior Championship and the Spare Time Memorial Excellence. A five-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.com, Mark finished fifth in sectionals a season ago.
Mark is a California Scholarship Federation (CSF) lifetime member and has maintained a 3.7 GPA during prep career at Fremont Christian School.
The Wildcats final recruit is from Orchard Park, N.Y., where he has been one of the top singles players for Orchard Park high school in his three-year prep career. Schafer was second in USTA Eastern High Points during the 2008 season in both the 16- and 18-year old division. In the 16-year old division, Schafer ranks 4th in the eastern section and 108th nationally, while he is ranked 84th overall in the 18-year old division. A second-place finisher at the USTA National Open Labor Day Championships, Schafer was honored with the USTA Eastern Lawrence A. Miller Boys' 16U Sportsmanship Award in 2007. In the 18-year old division, Schafer also was awarded the Delco Tennis Association, PA USTA National Open Sportsmanship award.
Schafer was honored with the prestigious Bryan Scholarship at Davidson.
The Wildcats open their spring season with three straight road matches in the Northeast with trips to Boston University (5 p.m.), Brown (2 p.m.) and Boston College (11 a.m.), Jan. 23-25. Davidson is coming off a 14-8 campaign and return eight letterwinners from a year ago, including three starters.
