DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the second straight year, the Davidson women's soccer team had its season end on a late goal by its Southern Conference rival, the Furman Paladins, as Katya Gokhman netted her first career goal in the 88th minute to bring an end the Wildcats' season in a first-round matchup of the No. 4 and 5 seeds of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Sunday at Alumni Stadium.
With both teams going back and forth all game in controlling possession of the field, Furman was able to slip by the Wildcat defense behind the play of Martha Hall and Gokhman. Hall drove just past the mid-field line into Davidson's territory where she played a wide ball to Gokhman on the far side of the field. The Paladin freshman tracked the ball down on the corner of the 18-yard box where she had just enough of an angle on her defender to cross the ball high and to the far post for her first collegiate goal.
Davidson quickly reset the ball and drove down the field, and earned a foul on the far side, about 25 yards out. Junior Lauren Conner's (Mechanisburg, Pa.) pass off the free kick was then knocked around in the box, before Furman cleared the ball out and halted any chance Davidson had of tying the game.
The Wildcats, who were hosting their third straight first-round match since the SoCon went back to the format of the top-four seeds hosting the first round, closed out their 2008 campaign at 10-6-3. It was the fifth straight year they had a winning record and the 10 wins also marked the fifth year a row it had hit double digits in the win column.
With the victory, Furman advances to the semifinals to play the No. 1-seeded UNC Greensboro Spartans, who defeated Appalachian State, 6-0, earlier in the day. The Paladins improved to 14-6-1, and ran its record against Davidson in the tournament to 5-1-1, having won the last five meetings.
The SoCon semifinals (Nov. 7) and championship game (Nov. 9) will be played in Charleston, S.C., as College of Charleston is the host this year.
As showcased by the box score, both teams played fairly even all game. Both squads finished with 11 shots and the foul count was 13-12, with Davidson having the one extra foul. Furman did have eight corner kicks, but the Wildcat defense shut down every one of those scoring chances.
Davidson had its chances to break up the scoreless tie, but just were not able punch one through when the opportunities presented themselves.
The first chance was in the 20th minute when a long through ball by Conner into the box was headed by midfielder Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas), but the shot went wide right. Low, who had a team-high five shots with two of them coming on goal, had shots in the 34th, 35th and 36th minutes, nearly missing a goal in the 35th minute as Jessica Smith of Furman was there to stop the shot.
Then in the 67th minute of the second half, another header, this time by senior co-captain Tracy McCausland (Albuquerque, N.M.) just outside the six-yard box, went over the crossbar.
Freshman Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) did a nice job between the pipes, recording a game-high six saves. The freshman closed out her first year with 24 of Davidson's 74 saves recorded its goalkeepers.
The game marked the final time that seniors McCausland, Tiffany Mumby (Houston, Texas), Melanee Smith (Bloomfield Township, Mich.), Neely Meeks (Eaglewood, Colo.), Chloe King (Wellesley, Mass.), Kate McCormick (Pelham, N.Y.), Ali Rittenberg (Marietta, Ga. and Lexie Rittenberg (Marietta, Ga.)will suit up for the Wildcats. The class of 2008 finished their four-year career with a record of 48-22-8 and reached the tournament semifinals twice.
