DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open the 2008-09 season with a pair of Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association foes, hosting N.C. A&T on Friday night and the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcat women will open the weekend with a 5 p.m. meet Friday against the Aggies at Cannon Natatorium. It is the first meet of the season for N.C. A&T, who like the Wildcats, were an inaugural member of the CCSA last season. The Aggies will continue their road trip with a tri-meet at Gardner-Webb Saturday, swimming against the host Bulldogs and VMI. A&T is coached by Shawn Hendrix, now in her 10th season of coaching and ninth with the program.
Davidson will wrap up the weekend by hosting familiar CCSA foe College of Charleston at 2 p.m. Saturday. The men's roster boasts current CCSA Men's Swimmer of the Week, junior Randy Buchanan, who earned the award following an impressive performance at the Savannah College of Art & Design duals on October 18. He medaled in three individual events and was a key component of the Cougars second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Those performances helped lead Charleston to a 132-127 victory over SCAD and a 1-0 start to the 2008-09 season. The College of Charleston women's team dropped a pair of decisions, 203-58 to Georgia Southern and 186-75 to SCAD. Sara Gardocki (500 free; 5:08.20) and Morgan Hall ( 100 fly, 59.50) were individual winners.
The Wildcat men and women each enter the weekend seeking their first dual-meet victory of the 2008-09 season, having dropped contests at Clemson and East Carolina. Nonetheless, each program is showing early-season signs of life, with the Wildcat men led by an impressive group of newcomers in Geoffrey Peitz, Ben Lane, Curtis Chaney and Joe Burquist, to name a few. The Wildcat women continue to be led by a strong sophomore class, as Lindsey Martin, Anna Stringfield, Jessica Delgehausen and Emily Castle have picked up wins in the early meets.
The Wildcats will return to action next weekend, hosting Emory at 1 p.m. Saturday Nov. 1.
