DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and junior Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) teamed up to win their first two matches in leading the Davidson men's tennis team in their final fall event at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Mideast Regional Championships held on the campus of UNC, Oct. 16-19.
The duo started in the "open" doubles bracket where they took home two tie-breaker wins to advance into the "main" doubles draw. They first defeated a doubles team from Liberty, 9-8(4), before then downing Doug Kenney and Austin Roebuck of Georgia Tech by the same score, 9-8(2).
Their first match in the seeded doubles bracket was another closely battled affair, but Gee and Noble fell short in an 8-3 loss to Dylan Arnould and Reid Carleton of Duke.
Gee and Noble also participated in singles action over the weekend as they played in the "open" singles bracket. Gee dropped his lone match, 6-4, 6-3, to Jack Roux of USC-Upstate, while Noble won his first set, but lost his next two in falling, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, to Chase Helpingstine of Elon.
Also competing in singles was sophomore Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.), who started the weekend in the "main" single draw. He drew Error Spot of Duke and played well, but could not advance beyond his first round match, falling by the score of 7-6, 6-3.
He later teamed up with senior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) in the "main" doubles draw, where the tandem played a team from Clemson and dropped a very close, 9-8(4), match.
