GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Returning to action after a weekend off, the Wildcat men's swimmers were led by an impressive freshman class, while the sophomore women continued to dominate the competition, as the teams competed in a dual-meet at Eastern Carolina University Friday night.
Despite strong individual performances, the ECU men bettered the Wildcats by a margin of 173-109, while the women won with a score of 176-113.
"Against a very good ECU team, we had a lot to be excited about tonight," head coach John Young said. "No doubt we are fit; I'm excited to see what some of these athletes do when we clean up the racing flaws that revealed themselves today."
Freshman Geoffrey Peitz continued to impress early in his collegiate career, swimming lifetime bests in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes and nearly winning the 100 fly as well. Peitz finished first in the 100 back with a time of 52.35 and the 200 back with a time of 1:53.62. In the 100 fly, he finished second with a time of 51.80, just behind winner Andrew Stoker (51.75). All of his times were Davidson Top 10 times.
Classmate Brian Seo placed first in the 400 IM, finishing with a time of 4:13.01, another Wildcat Top 10 time. Channeling Michael Phelps, Seo won the event without his contacts in, all the more impressive.
Continuing the youth movement on the men's side, freshman Ben Lane swept the diving events, winning the three-meter event with a score of 292.80 and the one-meter with a score of 256.65.
On the women's side, sophomore Lindsey Martin turned in another solid effort, swimming her fastest unrested 50 free, finishing first with a time of 23.65, and leading off the 200 medley relay, which finished third, with a strong split.
Classmates Jessica Delgehausen and Emily Castle also had good meets. Castle finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.87, just two tenths off her rested school record, and Delgehausen finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.27.
The Wildcats will return to action next weekend, opening the home season by hosting CCSA-foe College of Charleston at 2 p.m. on Oct. 25.
