DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team will wrap up its two-game homestand with a Southern Conference contest against Furman on Tuesday night at John M. Belk Arena.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (12-7, 6-2 SoCon), who has won its past four straight games, plays host to the Furman Paladins (6-14, 1-8 SoCon) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Davidson has defeated Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro, Elon and Wofford during the winning streak.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is one of the oldest in the program history as both teams have met 42 times, with Furman leading 25-17. Lately, the Wildcats have had the Paladins number, winning eight of the past nine contests including last year's two-game sweep.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson seeks its ninth win in the past 10 meetings when it plays host to Furman on Tuesday in the final of a two-game homestand. The Wildcats took both meetings last year, including a 75-55 win at John M. Belk Arena in the 11th game of the season.
With a 70-58 win over Wofford last Saturday, Davidson ran its season-high winning streak to four straight to improve to 12-7 overall and give head coach Annette Watts win No. 111.
Junior Mercedes Robinson scored 10 of her game-high 16 points and hauled in nine of her career-best 15 rebounds in the second half as Davidson outscored Wofford, 38-26, in the second period to capture the 70-58 Southern Conference win. The double-double marked the seventh of the season for Robinson and gave her 10 in her career.
Robinson went 7-of-11 from the field and added a couple of free throws on her way to scoring in double figures for the 10th time this year. The 16-point effort was the second time in the past three games she has scored that many. All 15 of Robinson's rebounds came off the defensive glass.
During the four-game winning streak, Robinson is pouring in almost 13 points a game and hauling in six rebounds a game, all the while shooting 55.6 percent from the field.
Also contributing big during the winning streak is senior Danielle Hemerka. The senior guard/forward scored her 1,000th career point in a win at Elon on Jan. 21 and is averaging a team-best 15 points per game during the run.
With a 6-2 home mark, Davidson is 16-4 the past two years. The 'Cats are averaging 68 points a game in home contests this year and nailing close to 35 percent of its shots from long range. Senior Honna Housley has led the charge at home, averaging 12 points a game and having hit 18 of her 26 total three-pointers on the season.
Scouting the Paladins
Furman scored its first conference win of the season with a 73-63 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday. Prior to the win, the Paladins had dropped their last four games, and their last eight league contests.
Chrissy Phelps led four Lady Paladins in double-digit points as Furman hit the 70-mark for the sixth time of the season. Phelps finished with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists in the winning effort. In last year's two contests against the Wildcats, Phelps combined for 37 points, including 23 in the final regular-season game against Davidson.
The Paladins' other two leading scorers, Kali Holtfreter and Katie Johnson, each scored 13 and 11 points, respectively at ASU. Holtfreter is dropping in a team-best 11 points a game, while Johnson is just behind her with a 10.5 average. Johnson also leads the squad in rebounding at 6.4 boards per contest, which ranks sixth in the conference. Her 21 blocks top the team and rank her fourth in the league (1.31 bpg).
Furman is averaging under 60 points in league games at 57.3, while surrendering nearly 67 points a game. Opponents are shooting 43 percent overall against the Paladins, but they counter act that percentage by nailing 36 percent of their three-balls and draining 77 percent of their free throws, both numbers top the league in each category.
Returning from last year's 11-20 team is 11 of the 14 letterwinners, including three of the five starters.
The Paladins are 3-8 in road contests this year, but just 1-4 in league games. The lone road win came at Appalachian State this past Saturday.
The last time the Paladins picked up a road against the Wildcats was on Jan. 9, 2001, an 81-53 victory.
