DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In their final home meet of the season, the Wildcat women used a first-place finish in the final event to earn a dramatic 151-148 win over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks and the Campbell Camels, 232-59, on Saturday afternoon at the Cannon Natatorium. The Seahawks evened the score with a win over the Wildcat men, 191.50-99.50.
On the women's side, it came down to the final event, and junior Courtney Sanders, sophomore Caitlin Sheetz, freshman Emily Castle and classmate Lindsey Martin did not disappoint, winning the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:34.55
"A meet that comes down to the final relay is probably the most exciting team situation in our sport," head coach John Young said. "I'm happy that the women got to experience that today and ecstatic that they responded to the situation with the fire and poise necessary to win. This is a great step for our team."
"We needed eight women to be great at the end, and they were," he continued. "It was exciting, and they won. I'm proud of them today."
The Wildcat women took first and second in the 1000 free, with junior Alanna Ream winning the heat with a time of 10:42.37. Sheetz was right behind with a time of 10:43.85 for a runner-up finish.
The women also finished one and two in the 200 free, as freshman Anna Stringfield posted her first win of the day with a time of 1:53.51. Classmate Jessica Delgehausen was second in a time of 1:55.29. Stringfield also posted wins in the 200 back (2:08.34) and the 400 IM (4:32.98).
"Anna Stringfield had a big day for us, winning three individual events and anchoring the relay that needed to take third for us to win," Young said. "She was fierce."
Martin continued to dominate the sprints, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 23.95 and 53.33, respectively.
"Lindsey was great today, too," Young said. "She won two individual events, and anchored the winning relay with the meet on the line. She is the swimmer we want on the blocks in that situation, and she didn't disappoint."
.
On the men's side, the Wildcat men got off to a hot start, finishing first in the 200 medley relay as junior Scott Frantz, sophomore Nate Ladner, sophomore Miller Williams and senior Fiete Stegger touched first in a time of 1:35.95. Williams also won the 100 fly with a time of 53.52.
Frantz continued to prove a force in the backstrokes, winning both the 100 and 200 backstrokes with times of 52.75 and 1:55.61, respectively.
"For the men, Scott Frantz continues to impress in the backstrokes," Young said. "He kicked off our medley in a commanding way, and took two convincing victories in his signature events."
Seniors Kirsten Allen, Leslie Sherrill, Maddie Stough, Robb Broughton, Will Broughton, Stegger and Adam Topaz were honored in pre-meet festivities.
"We had good efforts from all our seniors today, highlighted by the Broughton brothers," Young said. "Will was second in the 1000, but with a tremendous effort and a very fast time, the fastest that he has been in a dual meet. Robb swam a great 200 fly in a victorious effort, also a personal dual meet best."
In his final home meet, Robb Broughton won the 200 fly with a time of 1:57.16, while Will Broughton swam a runner-up time of 9:41.97 in the 1000.
The Wildcat swimmers will return to action on Feb. 2 when they travel to Radford for a meet with Virginia Tech, VMI and the Highlanders at 1 p.m., the team's final meet before the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships.
