RALEIGH, N.C. — Playing in their second straight match in as many days, the Davidson women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the season when the Wildcats dropped a 7-0 road decision to No. 40 N.C. State on Friday evening at the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Stadium.
Davidson, who last played the Wolfpack in 2005, fell to 1-1 on the year. N.C. State improved to 2-0, earning its second straight win over a Southern Conference opponent after defeating Elon last Sunday, Jan. 20 to open the season.
The Wildcats were only able to capture one of the three doubles matches as they fell behind by an early score of 1-0. Scoring the lone doubles win, and the only win on the evening in doubles or singles, was freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) with an 8-6 victory over Berkeley Brock and Neils Barringer. It was the duos second straight win at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the closest Wildcat to earning a win in singles play as she battled Julia Roach in a straight set defeat. Fanney dropped the first set, 6-3, before nearly taking the second set when Roach earned a 7-6 tie-breaker win.
Sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) and senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) each faced their first ranked opponents of the season at No. 1 and 2 singles play. Berry was only able to take four games from No. 97 Berkeley Brock in a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.
Linville pushed No. 79 Daria Petrovic to a tie-breaker in the first set of her match, before falling 7-6. She was then swept 6-0 in the second set, dropping her to 0-2 on the season.
The Wildcats finish up their three straight matches to open the season with a home match against Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
