DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson returns home after a two-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 26 with a Southern Conference contest against Wofford at John M. Belk Arena.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (11-7, 5-2 SoCon) is hunting for its fourth straight win when it plays host to the Wofford Terriers (9-9, 2-5 SoCon) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Davidson has defeated Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro and Elon during the winning streak.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series has Davidson leading 18-11 after taking two of the three meetings last year against the Terriers. The Wildcats had their 10-game win streak vs. Wofford snapped last year, but still have won 11 of the past 12 in the series.
Scouting the Wildcats
The Wildcats will be looking to set a new season-high when they go for their fourth straight win when Wofford comes visiting on Saturday at 2 p.m. Davidson will need a few more beyond that to match last year's school record 10 straight victories.
Senior Danielle Hemerka led the Wildcats to their eighth straight win over Elon on Monday, Jan. 21 with her first double-double of the season, while becoming the 11th Wildcat in program history to join the 1,000-point club. In front of friends and family members who made the trek down from Blackwood, N.J., Hemerka had one of her best games of the season. She finished 9-of-13 from the field and 2-for-4 from long range for her third 20-point game of her career, and the fourth of the season for a Wildcat. She then hauled in 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of her career.
Hemerka's 1,000th and 1,001st points came at the end of a 13-3 run when she stepped back from the free throw line and drained a shot from the top of the key that gave the Wildcats a commanding 44-32 lead with 8:57 to go in the game. Davidson did not allow Elon to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way for the 10-point win.
The senior's name is pepper throughout the record books, ranking in the top-15 in rebounds, field goals made and attempted, three-pointers made and attempted, assists and steals.
Davidson took two of its three meetings against Wofford last year, including a 71-62 victory in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament. In their last meeting at Belk Arena vs. the Terriers, the 'Cats earned their largest win ever in a Southern Conference game, 86-39. The win against the Terriers is the 4th largest since the resurrection of the program in 1992-93.
The Wildcats currently sit at 5-2 at home this year and are 15-4 the past two years.
Scouting the Terriers
Wofford enters play on Saturday having dropped its last five contests, including a 74-49 decision to Chattanooga on Monday, Jan. 21.
Prior to dropping its last five, the Terriers rattle off a season-high six straight wins. It was the longest win streak since they tallied a six-game winning streak from Feb. 2 to Dec. 2, 1989. The run overlapped two seasons, including the 1988-89 campaign as Wofford was competing as an NCAA Division II program for the first time. The Terriers have had only six winning streaks of at least six games throughout their history.
Liz Miller and Kelsi Koenig each recorded 12 points against the Mocs on Monday. Miller paces the team in scoring with a 12.2 points per game average, which ranks third in the SoCon. She also ranks sixth in the league in assists per game (3.22) and steals per game (2.83).
Koenig is second on the team with her 10.3 points per game despite having played only 12 of the Terriers 18 games. The forward, who had seven boards against the Mocs, is hauling in nearly six boards a contest. Koenig led the Terriers with eight rebounds in their last meeting against Davidson, while also chipping in 13 points.
Defensively, Wofford has held opponents to 36.9 percent shooting and three players have registered over 20 blocks. Kelly Dwyer leads the block parade with 28 swats. Dwyer has also recorded 43 steals, second most on the team.
Wofford is sporting a 3-6 road record, but are 0-2 in league games.
The Terrier were one of the most improved teams in the conference last year, going from seven wins to 13 overall. They brought back nine of the 13 letterwinners from last season, including four of the five starters.
Up Next
The 'Cats remain at home when they host Furman on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. Davidson has won eight of the past nine meetings, including the last three games in the series.
