Scouting the Seahawks
Last Time Out: Sophomore Caitlin Kirsteier and senior Matt Layne set pool records as UNC Wilmington posted a split of a CAA swimming and diving match up with William & Mary Saturday. The Seahawk men posted an impressive 183-115 victory while the women were edged by a 157-143 count. The Seahawks will also compete against Gardner-Webb on Friday evening in Boiling Springs.
Kirsteier, who matched her own school-record in setting the pool record, posted a time of 56.89 to win the 100 butterfly. Layne, meanwhile, broke his second pool record of the season in winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.90. Layne completed a solid afternoon by winning the 200 breaststroke (2:10.63).
Swimmers to Watch: Matt Layne was named Colonial Athletic Association swimmer-of-the-week on Tuesday after breaking his second pool record of the season over the weekend. It was Layne's second time earning CAA honors after also earning the award on Nov. 5. In the Seahawks meet against William & Mary, the Clifton, Va., native won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. His time of 57.90 in the 100 set a pool record. Earlier this season, Layne set a pool standard in a meet at James Madison. Layne is currently ranked second in the CAA in the 100 breaststroke (56.62) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.18).
Next Up: The Seahawks will return to action on Sun., Feb. 3 as they host Wingate.
Scouting the Camels
Last Time Out: Campbell is coming off a pair of losses, falling to Georgia Southern (223-70) and FGCU (204-84). The Camels will also compete against Gardner-Webb and UNC Wilmington on Friday evening in Boiling Springs.
Swimmers to Watch: In the Camels last action, freshman Ashlyn Stumpf captured three school records (in the 50-yard freestyle (24.64), 100-yard freestyle (54.23) and 100-yard butterfly (1:00.89)), and Campbell's only individual triumph of the meet. In addition to Stumpf, Campbell has had several other record-setting performances this season. Junior Patricia Jimenez broke the 50-fly (28.07) record at North Carolina A&T on Jan. 11, while Jackie Kenline shattered Campbell's 200-fly best posting a 2:17.74 in the event. The Camels' 200-medley relay team consisting of Kelly Mullican, Heidi Shallow, Jimenez and Kenline, also topped Campbell's previous record touching in 1:52.62.
