WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Davidson women's tennis team opened up their fall slate of tournaments with a trip to the eight-team Wake Forest Invitational as 11 Wildcats were represented at the invitational.
"It was an excellent opportunity to gain some valuable match experience for the girls with three solid days of competition," said head coach Caroline Price, who returns for her 26th season.
Senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.), junior Lora Dushanova (Silven, Bulgaria), and sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) each tallied wins in the first round to lead Davidson in singles play on day one. Berry went on to earn third place in the flight two singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Meg Zebroski of Dartmouth.
Skeeters advanced all the way to the finals in the flight seven singles bracket over the weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 first round win over Catja Carrell and then another straight set win, 7-5, 6-2, over Stephanie Heller of Indiana. Her run eventually came to end with a loss in the finals to a player from Indiana.
Senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) reached the finals of the flight five consolation bracket and earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ryan Reichal of Dartmouth in the finals.
Matching Whelan with a finals appearance in the her consolation bracket of the flight four singles was Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) as the freshman scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jackie Payne, before falling in the finals by the count of 6-4, 7-6(6).
Fellow freshmen Ashley Mincey (Miami, Fla.) and Molly Verlin also competed in their first collegiate matches, playing the round-robin flight eight singles bracket.
Two other underclassmen, sophomore Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshmen Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) each reached the finals in the flight seven singles bracket.
Davidson was also well represented in doubles play over the weekend with the team of Skeeters and Galainena having the best showing. After dropping their first round match, the duo won the consolation finals of the flight two doubles with an 8-2 win in the quarterfinals, an 8-6 win in the semifinals and a hard fought 9-7 victory in the finals.
Davidson will take a week off before heading up to the Virginia Tech Tournament on the 5th of October for its second fall tournament.
